MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis players seniors Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) were named the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Doubles Athletes of the Week for the week of March 1-8, it was announced today by the NEWMAC.
The honor marks the first time a Lyon tandem has earned the award since Izzy Gorham '16 and Amanda Brazell '17 were selected on September 21, 2015 as the top weekly doubles team.
In Wheaton's only match of the week, Greenlee and Ortiz cruised past the College of St. Scholastica sophomore duo of Paula Sendele (Icking, Germany) and Sophia Cosgrove (Bli Bli, , Australia), 6-1, at number one doubles to help the Lyons earn a 6-1 dual match victory on March 8 in Orlando, Fla.
For the season, the Greenlee and Ortiz pairing has compiled a 7-4 season record, including tournament play. The pair is 3-2 in dual match play and advanced to the Semifinals of the Doubles Grass Court Championship on October 9 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. The combo also earned a spot in the Semifinals of the New England Women's Tennis Invitational Tournament on October 11 this past fall.
Wheaton returns to the courts on Monday, March 9 when it takes on Transylvania University in Lakeland, Fla. at 8:30 a.m.
