Women's Tennis Nipped by Bryn Mawr, 4-3

Box Score

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was nipped by Bryn Mawr College, 4-3, this morning at the United States Tennis Association Natio

The Lyons drop to 4-4 on the season, while the Owls improve to 5-3.

Bryn Mawr won two of three doubles matches to earn the first point of the dual match, in what turned out to be a crucial point with each side winning three singles matches apiece.

Junior Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) was a double-winner to lead Wheaton. She teamed with first year Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.) to record a 6-4 victory at number three doubles over Owl sophomore Carina Roberts (York, Pa.) and Lily Braswell (Englewood, Ohio.). Wilson dropped just three games in a 6-3, 6-0 win at fifth singles over Bryan Mawr senior Gioanna Zhao (Guangzhou, Guangdong, China).

The Lyons also scored wins at third and fourth singles. Junior Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) dominated at number four singles, surrendering just one game to Owl first year Giselle Gandakusuma (San Gabriel, Calif.) in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph. Senior Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) also won in straight sets for Wheaton, earning a 6-0, 6-4 decision at third singles over Bryn Mawr sophomore Claire Emanuel (Delaware, Ohio).

The Owls gained a pair of tightly-battled wins at first and second doubles to earn the initial point of the match. Emanuel combined with senior Kelli Eng (Hillsborough, Calif.) for a 7-5 win at number one doubles over Ortiz and Lyon senior Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas). Zhao paired with Owl senior Sophie Fenster (Riviera Beach, Fla.) to come away with a 6-4 victory at second doubles over Hollis and junior Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.).

Fenster cruised at number one singles with matching 6-1, 6-1 set victories over Greenlee, while Eng dropped four games apiece in a 6-4, 6-4 result over Haraj-Sai at second singles for Bryn Mawr.

With the match tied at 3-3, sixth singles determined the day's winner. The three-set battle was most hard-fought of all the singles contests with Braswell taking the opening set over Robinson, 6-2, before Robinson returned the favor with a 6-2 second set win of her own to send the match into a tie-breaker. Braswell came out on top for the Owls with a 10-7 win to take the match.

Wheaton returns to the courts tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. when it takes on Otterbein University at Sylvan Lake Tennis Center in Sanford, Fla., while Bryn Mawr plays PIedmont University tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. at the USTA National Campus.
