Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team got a win from their number one doubles pair of seniors
Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and
Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) but the Lyons fell to Trinity College (Conn.) in their final regular season match of the season 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Lyons fell to 9-10 overall with the loss, while the Bantams improved to 4-12 on the year with the win.
Despite the win from Greenlee and Ortiz in doubles play, Trinity was able to win the other two doubles contests to capture the doubles point.
Wheaton juniors
Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) and
Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) finished their doubles match first in the number two position. Senior Elise Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) and sophomore Brennan Damond (San Francisco, Calif.) cruised to a 6-1 win to start the hosts off on the right foot.Â
The Texas Tandem of Ortiz and Greenlee was next to finish. They jumped ahead of junior Naisha Rathi (Westbury, N.Y.) and first year Emilia Romano (Bayport, N.Y.) to a 4-0 lead early, but the Bantams resisted the effort. A scrappy effort from the two seniors saw out the win for Wheaton as they downed the hosts 6-4.Â
First year
Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior
Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) played the deciding match in the number three doubles for the Lyons. Sophomore Kendall Cedar (Houston, Texas) and Julia Clark (Williamsburg, Va.) stayed even with the Wheaton pair to a 2-2 tie, before the Bantams pulled away for a 6-3 win. The win gave the doubles point to Trinity, and the Bantams went ahead with a 1-0 lead.Â
Junior
Isabella Cottrell (Melrose, Mass.) was first to finish her singles match for Wheaton as she fell to Romano in straight-sets in the number five singles match. Robinson suffered the same fate for the Lyons in the number four singles match as Brennan took the win in straight-sets to make it 3-0 for Trinity.
Wheaton first year
Lily Runyan (New Milford, Conn.) faced off against Hellena Trojer (Reading, Mass.) in the number six singles match. Runyan was held scoreless as she fell in the first set 6-0, but improved in the second set despite a 6-2 loss. The win for Trojer gave Trinity its fourth point and the victory, but there were still three matches to be finished.Â
Greenlee was next to wrap up as she fell in the number one singles against senior Allie Francis (Westport, Conn.). Greenlee and Francis were even in the first set at 2-2, but the Bantam pulled away for a 6-2 win in the initial set. Francis secured the win with a 6-1 triumph in the second set, giving Trinity its fifth point.Â
Ortiz was held scoreless in the first set of the number three singles match by Cedar as she fell 6-0. The senior clawed her way back into contention during the second set, but ultimately fell 6-3. Haraj-Sai and Rathi faced off in the longest singles match of the day in the number two position. Rathi pulled away early in the first set as she cruised to a 6-1 win. The Wheaton junior managed one more point in the second set, but ultimately fell 6-2 to cede the sweep to Trinity.Â
Wheaton will take on Wellesley College in the first round of the 2026 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament on Tuesday, April 28 at 5:00 p.m. Trinity (Conn.) will await the seeding to settle in the New England Small College Athletic Conference before the championship tournament begins on May 1st.Â
