KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team swept through doubles play and won five of six singles matches to come away with a 6-1 victory over Olivet Nazarene University this evening at Oak Street Park & Community Center in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Lyons have won three straight and improve to 4-3 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 0-6.
Juniors Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) joined first year Lily Runyan (New Milford, Conn.) as double winners in the dual match for Wheaton. Hollis combined with junior Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) for a 6-0 win at number one doubles over the Olivet Nazarene pair of junior Rafaela Luna (Lima, Peru) and sophomore Savannah Amatyleon (Mahomet, Ill.). Wilson paired with Wheaton first year Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.) in a 6-2 triumph over Tiger sophomore Jori Lambert (New Lenox, Ill.) and first year Lyla Boecher (Elkhart, Ind.) at second doubles. Runyan joined first year Lydia Branson (Bowdoin, Maine) for a 7-6 (1) victory for the Lyons over Olivet Nazarene's sophomore combo of Olivia Bonniver (Pontiac, Ill.) and Alexis Townsend (Wheaton, Ill.).
Wilson dominated at number four singles for Wheaton with a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of Boecher, while Hollis dropped just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles over Amatyleon. Runyan followed suit at sixth singles with a 6-1, 6-2 showing against first year Desiree Mofield (Swartz Creek, Mich.).
The Lyons also received wins at second singles from senior Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) and at fifth singles from sophomore Isabella Cottrell (Melrose, Mass.). Ortiz defeated Lambert, 6-3, 6-2, while Cottrell defeated Tiger first year Carrlene Webb (Columbus, Ohio) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
Olivet Nararene's only point came at number one singles after a three-set triumph for Luna. She won the first set, 7-5, over Haraj-Sai, but fell in the middle frame, 6-2. Luna regrouped to win the third set, 10-4, in the tie-breaker.
Wheaton returns to the court on Wednesday, March 11 when it plays Bryn Mawr College at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Fla. at 8:00 a.m., while the Tigers take on Nichols College tomorrow at the USTA National Campus.
