Singles Sweep Sees Women's Tennis Pounce on Transylvania, 6-1

LAKELAND, Fla. - A total sweep of the singles highlighted the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team's 6-1 victory over Transylvania University in Lakeland, Florida on Monday morning. Four Lyons won their singles game in straight-sets, but none did so as cleanly as junior Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) who swept her opponent 6-1, 6-0.

The Lyons improve to 3-3 with their second straight win, while Transylvania suffers just their second loss of the season to fall to 4-2.

Hollis might have had the cleanest straight-set sweep, but junior Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.), junior Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H) and first year Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.) each managed to sweep their singles opponent.

The Lyons were slowed up in the doubles as Pioneers pairing junior Lily Hartman (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Ellie Held (San Antonio, Texas) shut out Haraj-Sai and Wilson. The Pioneers secured the doubles point as junior Eva Clark (London, Ky.) and senior Maddy Williams (Marfield, Ky.) also shut out Robinson and junior Isabella Cottrell (Melrose, Mass.). Senior Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) and senior Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) managed to win their match from first doubles to prevent the Pioneers from sweeping.

Greenlee had to fight to win from first singles, as sophomore Paulina Razo-Zapata (San Antonio, Texas) pushed her to the very edge in the first set. Greenlee managed to hang on and won the final point to secure the opener 7-5, but Razo-Zapata came back to win the second set 6-4. Greenlee claimed victory in the third and final set to keep the singles sweep alive for Wheaton.

Ortiz faced an uphill battle early on from third singles as Williams took the first set 6-4. Ortiz roared to life in the second set, pinning the Pioneer behind a 6-2 win. A victory in the third set gave the Lyons a sweep over Transylvania in the singles. Wheaton overcame a tough day in the doubles to win 6-1.

Wheaton will resume play later today in Kissimmee, Florida as they take on Olivet Nazarene University at 6:30 pm. Transylvania will stay in Orlando as they take on Hamline University at 8:00 am tomorrow morning.
