ORLANDO, Fla. - Doubles dominance highlighted the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team's win over College of St. Scholastica as the Lyons swept the Saints in the doubles en route to a 6-1 win in Orlando, Florida on Sunday morning.
The Lyons improve to 2-3 on the season with their first win of the spring, while the Saints fall to 2-7 with the loss.
Junior
Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and
Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) were perfect in their doubles match, waltzing to a 6-0 win over Saints tandem senior Chloe Hasbargen (Bemidji, Minn.) and junior Care Rewertz (Hibbing, Minn.) in the second doubles. Senior
Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and senior
Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) combined for a 6-1 win in the first doubles over Saints sophomore Paula Sendele (Icking, Germany) and sophomore Sophia Cosgrove (Bli Bli, Australia), continuing the Lyons dominance with two players on the surface. First yearsÂ
Lily Runyan (New Milford, Conn.) andÂ
Lydia Branson (Bowdoin, Maine) wrapped up the doubles sweep with a 6-2 victory over first year Greta Clark (Superior, Wis.) and junior Hailey Hokanson (Sauk Centre, Minn.).Â
Hasbargen picked up the lone point for the Saints with a straight-set victory (6-2, 6-4) over junior
Isabella Cottrell (Melrose, Mass.) in the sixth singles.Â
Wheaton earned straight-set victories in third through fifth singles, clinching the match behind the unstoppable force of first year
Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.), junior
Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) and Hollis. Greenlee and Haraj-Sai faced more resistance in the first and second singles respectively, as each dropped their first set. Haraj-Sai turned it around in the second set with a clean 6-4 win, but Greenlee had to take an extra point and won her second set at 7-5. Greenlee was able to keep it clean in the third set, taking the victory with a 6-4 win. Haraj-Sai was forced to win an extra point in her third set, which she clinched to win 7-6. The strong bounce-back performances from the top-two singles players secured the 6-1 win for Wheaton.
The Lyons will keep the Florida action coming tomorrow morning in Lakeland as they take on Transylvania at 8:30 am. St. Scholastica will take on Marymount tomorrow in Orlando. Â
