WESTON, Mass. – Junior Jaz Vanderhoof (Portland, Maine) won the 5000 meters and sophomore Lauren Hinckley (Niantic, Conn.) qualified for the Division III New England Championship in the triple jump to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's track & field team today at the Regis Spring Classic in Weston, Mass.
The Lyons scored 53 points as a team to place fifth, while Worcester State University tallied 84 points to top the field.
Vanderhoof clocked in at 18:59.05 to win the event by 2.8 tenths of a second for Wheaton. First year Chloe Vescio (Douglas, Mass.) finished third with a time of 19:37.41. Hinckley placed second in the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 10.81 meters to qualify as the ninth-best distance in school history.
The Lyons' 4X100-meter relay squad finished second with a time of 50.48, behind sophomores Maya Thomas (Goffstown, N.H.), Camille Connors (Woburn, Mass.), Hinckley and first year Mimi Batista (Peabody, Mass.). Batista also shined in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.98 to finish second in the event. Thomas placed fifth in the race with a personal-record time of 1:01.38, while sophomore Natalie Shaw (Granby, Mass.) was 14th with a personal-best mark of 1:06.30.
Junior Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.) placed fifth in the 100 meters with a mark of 13.23 in addition to finishing eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:16.72. Connors turned in a personal-record clip of 26.78 to finish fifth in the 200 meters for Wheaton. Senior Eliza Speidel (Billerica, Mass.) was seventh at 27.16 and Shaw was 11th in the race with a personal-best mark of 1:06.30.
Sophomore Anella Bolster (Marcellus, N.Y.) registered personal-record marks in three different events. She placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 4.88 meters, while placing sixth in the pole vault with a height of 1.90 meters. She concluded her day by placing 13th in the 200 meters with a mark of 28.85. Junior Abby Martin (Keene, N.H.) led the Lyons in the 1500 meters, placing seventh with a time of 5:25.31, while first years Abby Wozniak (Blackstone, Mass.) and Niyati Hotha (South Brunswick, N.J.) finished 10th (5:28.13) and 17th (6:06.07), respectively in the event.
First year Maezy Gleason (Scarborough, Maine) led Wheaton's throwers with a personal-best heave of 9.75 meters to finish seventh in the shot put and was also 15th in the discus throw with a toss of 26.39. Senior Madison King (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished 15th in the shot put with a distance of 9.10 meters.
Junior Abbie Cramer (Farmington, Maine) placed 11th in the 110-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 18.94 and first year Reilly Hickey (Medford, Mass.) finished with a mark of 19.63 to place 13th.
The Lyons return to action tomorrow when they compete in the Emory Dooley Elite Meet hosted by Emory College in Atlanta, Ga. at 10:00 a.m.
