SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Junior Michaina Loriston (Boston, Mass.) broke the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference record for the 100 meters in the afternoon preliminaries, while classmate Jaz Vanderhoof (Portland, Maine) finished second in the 10,000 meters to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's track & field team at the NEWMAC Women's Track & Field Championship hosted by Mount Holyoke College at MHC Track & Turf in South Hadley, Mass.
The Lyons are currently in fourth place after the first day of competition with 16 points, while Massachusetts Institute of Technology dominated the first day with 92 points. United States Coast Guard Academy is just ahead of Wheaton with 18.5 points.
Loriston's time of 11.77 is the second-fastest time in school history and ranks second in all of NCAA Division III this season, while supplanting the former conference championship mark of 11.84, set by Wheaton's Kim Jones '04 in 2001. The former MHC Track & Turf standard was 12.04, established by Bowdoin College's Kianne Benjamin in 2024.
Junior Wendy Wooden (Sharon, Mass.) placed fourth in the prelim race for the Lyons with a personal-best time of 12.41 and will join Loriston in tomorrow's finals.
Vanderhoof posted a time of 38:48.37 for Wheaton, while first year Chloe Vescio (Douglas, Mass.) finished seventh with a time of 40:45.81.
Junior Anika Wagner (Elmore, Vt.) also scored points for the Lyons with a third-place effort in the hammer throw on a toss of 46.95 meters. Senior Madison King (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished 24th in the event with a distance of 25.74 meters.
Wheaton junior Abbie Cramer (Farmington, Maine) is currently fourth in the heptathlon after the first day with 1884 points. She finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.50, fourth in the 200 meters at 28.81, fifth in the shot put with a heave of 8.55 meters and ninth in the high jump with a height of 1.23 meters. Cramer also placed 12th in the javelin throw as an individual event with a toss of 30.44 meters.
Sophomore Anella Bolster (Marcellus, N.Y.) finished ninth in the long jump with a leap of 4.97 meters for the Lyons, while sophomore Christina Lang (Coventry, R.I.) was 13th with a personal-best mark of 4.78 meters. First year Reilly Hickey (Medford, Mass.) qualified for tomorrow's finals in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-record time of 17.02 to place 10th.
Wheaton returns to South Hadley tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. to compete in the final day of the NEWMAC Championship at Mount Holyoke.
