Men's Swimming Defeats Bridgewater State, 188-80

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's swimming and diving team defeated the Bridgewater State University Bears, 188-80, on Wednesday at Balfour Natatorium.

The Lyons kicked off the meet by sweeping the first three spots in the 200 yard medley relay. Jacob Cost, Jonathan Dunnett, Daniel Spencer and Frederick Garneau grabbed first place at 1:40.23. Tapping in right after them was Kevin Silva, Samuel Zarfos, Chris Steward and Jerard Fredette at 1:43.76. Jeremy Zak, Christian Tinory, Raymond Bortolot and Todd Lambert were next for the Lyons as they wrapped up at 1:46.97 to secure third place.

Wheaton held up pressure in the 1,000 yard freestyle as Timmer Sposato claimed first place at 10:50.50, Mackenzie DeWitt in second at 11:02.48 and James Horne in third at 11:19.48.

Next up in the 200 yard freestyle, Garneau (1:48.67), Lambert (1:53.20) and Cost (1:58.17) snagged the top three spaces for the Lyons. Silva, Zarfos and Fredette took their momentum in the 50 yard backstroke as they claimed spots two, three and four for Wheaton and Dunnett and Zak took first and second place in the 50 yard breaststroke.

Later on in the meet, Horne kept things going in the 100 yard butterfly by placing second at 57.10. Steward (58.65) and Jordan Petersen (1:02.17) followed him in third and fourth.

Wheaton cruised through the 50 yard freestyle as four Lyons claimed the top six places. Fredette placed first (23.15), Sposato second (23.67), David Bowen fifth (24.93) and Mike Gibson sixth (29.08). Bortolot and Silva tapped in back to back during the 100 yard freestyle to receive first and second place at 50.96 and 52.40.

Wheaton dominated in the 100 yard breaststroke by asserting the top four spots from Zarfos (1:02.06), Garneau (1:03.93), Tinory (1:10.09) and Bowen (1:10.22). The Lyons didn't slow down there as the top three positions in the 500 yard freestyle race were taken from Zak (5:16.78), Horne (5:25.10) and Petersen (5:33.99).

The 50 yard butterfly looked similar for the Lyons as they earned another top four finishes thanks to Dunnett (24.31), Spencer (25.35), Cost (25.76) and Bortolot (26.24).

Richard Davies swept the board for the Lyons in the one and three meter dives. He collected 226.43 final score in the three meter and a 221.55 in the one meter.

The Lyons travel to Roger Williams on Friday, Nov. 20 with competition slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
