Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. --- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team closed out the 2025-2026 campaign with a road win at the United States Coast Guard Academy as the Lyons took a 5-2 win to conclude play in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.
Wheaton improved to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in the NEWMAC with the win. Coast Guard fell to 2-9 overall and 1-6 in the NEWMAC after the loss.
Wheaton was tripped up by the Bears in doubles play. Junior
Jaime Gálligo (Madrid, Spain) and first year
Landon Wyshner (Winston Salem, N.C.) were nipped in the first doubles match as they dropped the tiebreaker to senior Brendan Love (Winchester, Va.) and junior Ben Bonetto (Bend, Oreg.). The Wheaton pair managed to hang on to a surge by the Bears pair, but they dropped the tiebreaker 7-5 to give Love and Bonetto a 7-6 win.
Sophomore
Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) and junior
Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) suffered a similar fate in the number two doubles match. Senior Ben Carlander (Monument, Colo.) and sophomore Konnor Eslinger (St. Louis, Mo.) took the second doubles match 6-4 to clinch the point for the hosts.
Junior
Paul Berteaux (Paris, France) and junior
Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) made up for their teammate's defeat as they blanked the Bears' pair of senior Logan Kwan (University Place, Wash.) and sophomore Anthony Gregoire (Hagatna, Guam) 6-0 in the third doubles match.
Berteaux stayed hot as he took on Eslinger in the number four singles match. He quickly dispatched his opponent, taking down Eslinger in straight-sets 6-2 as the first singles match to finish. Wheaton had a point on the board to tie the Bears at 1-1.
Van Dyke and Carlander squared off in the number five singles match, with Van Dyke coming out on top in straight-sets as well. He had to sweat a little to beat the Bear 6-3 in the first set, but he improved in the second set to win 6-2 for the Wheaton lead at 2-1.
Murray had to work hard to win the first set from first year Lucas Peltier-Salazar (Newhall, Calif.) as he broke through a deadlock to win 7-5. His second set was much smoother as he cruised to a 6-2 win in the number six singles match to put Wheaton at the brink of victory with a 3-1 lead.
Wyshner faced Love in the number three singles match and also had to win an extra point to take the first set 7-5. Love put up some resistance in the second set, but Wyshner managed to down him 6-4 to clinch the win for Wheaton.
Munoz had the longest first set in the number two singles match as Gregoire pushed him to a tiebreaker in the first set after a 6-6 tie. Munoz took the tiebreaker to edge Gregoire out of the first set, 7-6. The second set was a strong improvement from Munoz as he took down the sophomore Bear 6-3 to make it 5-1 for the Lyons.
Gálligo and Bonetto faced off in the number one singles match with a first set victory going to the Bear 6-4. Gálligo was able to force Bonetto to the edge in the second set, but the host took the extra point to win 7-5. The straight-set victory gave Coast Guard their second point to bring the final score to 5-2.
