Men's Tennis Taken Down by Emerson 6-1

Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team played a grueling match under the hot spring sun against Emerson College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference as the Lyons fell 6-1 on Wednesday in Norton.

Wheaton's number two doubles pairing of sophomore Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) and junior Jack Thain (Aberdeen, Scotland) finished their match first. The two cruised to a 6-1 win over the Emerson number two pairing of first year Tai Finestone (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Cameron McAllister (San Diego, Calif.) to start the day right for Wheaton.

Junior Jaime Gálligo (Madrid, Spain) and first year Landon Wyshner (Winston Salem, N.C.) were next to finish, but their result was not as favorable. The Wheaton duo fought hard, but were ultimately beaten by Lions duo junior Filippo Nocchi (Pontedera, Italy) and sophomore Connor Leung (Mercer Island, Wash.) 6-4 in the number one singles match.

Juniors Paul Berteaux (Paris, France) and Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) were the final pairing to finish their doubles match. First year Adam Alireza (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) and first year Caiden Riebold (Austin, Texas) had to win an extra point, but ultimately won over the Wheaton duo 7-5 to clinch the doubles point for Emerson.

Van Dyke was the first to finish in the singles, as his match in the number five position wrapped up in straight sets. He took down Riebold 6-3 in the first set before gliding to a 6-0 win in the second set. The match win put Wheaton on the board, but it would end as their only point in the contest.

Gálligo and Nocchi faced off in the number one singles match. Nocchi started off strong with a 6-4 win in the first set. Gálligo jumped ahead to a 2-1 lead in the second set, but Nocchi came roaring back to take the set 6-4 once again. McAllister also won his singles match in straight-sets, taking both frames from Thain in the number six singles match. Thain was able to take McAllister the distance in the second set, but the Emerson sophomore hung on to win 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker win.

Leung and Munoz faced off in the number two singles match. Leung took the first set 6-4, but Munoz came roaring back to take the second set 6-3. The extra set was taken by Leung as he cruised to a 6-1 win. Alireza was able to take down Wyshner in the number three singles as well. Wyshner took the first set 7-5 after a dramatic back-and-forth battle, but the Emerson rookie came back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-3.

Finestone also won in the number four singles as Berteaux also forced an extra set. The Wheaton junior took the first set with an emphatic 6-1 win, but fell in the second set 6-4. The resulting third set went the distance, but Berteaux fell 7-5 to give Emerson their sixth point. Wheaton fell to the Lions 6-1.

Wheaton will play in its final match of the regular season this Saturday in New London, Conn. as it faces United States Coast Guard Academy at 1:00 pm. Emerson will host Clark University on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in its final match of the regular season.
