NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team was untouchable in Friday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match against Salve Regina as the Lyons took down their opponent 7-0 in Norton.
Wheaton improved to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in the NEWMAC after the win. Salve Regina fell to 0-11 overall and 0-4 in the NEWMAC following the loss.
Junior
Paul Berteaux (Paris, France) and
Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) finished their doubles match first as they swept the number three position. Sophomore Rei Otake (Tokyo, Japan) and J.J. Hawkshead (Park Ridge, N.J.) failed to record a point as the Lyons tandem won 6-0.Â
The second doubles match was next to finish, with sophomore
Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) and junior
Jack Thain (Aberdeen, Scotland) dismantling their opposition 6-4. Senior Jacob Faulise (North Kingstown, R.I.) and first year Kole Pinto (Acushnet, Mass.) kept even with Munoz and Thain up through 4-4, but the Lyons pulled away at the end to earn the doubles point.
Wheaton's first doubles pairing of first year
Landon Wyshner (Winston Salem, N.C.) and
Jaime Gálligo (Madrid, Spain) went the longest as the Seahawks duo of Jasper Jensen (St. John, Jersey) and first year Colin Fleet (Fall River, Mass.) forced them to go the distance. There was nothing separating the two tandems as they went point-for-point all the way to a 6-6 deuce. The resulting tiebreaker saw the Wheaton pair pull away as they cruised to a 7-1 win in the extra play. The 7-6 win earned Wheaton a sweep in the doubles, setting the stage for a strong performance in the singles.Â
Thain finished his match first in the number five position. It was a dominant showing for him as he took Otake down in straight-sets. Thain won so thoroughly that Otake was unable to earn a single point as he dropped both frames 6-0.Â
First year
Sean Caldwell (Winchester, Mass.) finished next in the number six singles match. It was an identical result for the Wheaton rookie as he also downed his opponent Hawkshead in straight-sets. Much like Thain, Caldwell outright refused to cede a point to his opponent as he cruised to 6-0 wins in both sets.Â
Van Dyke and Fleet competed for the number four singles point, which Van Dyke claimed emphatically. Fleet was able to scrounge together a tougher challenge for Van Dyke, but the Lyon was up to the task. He won in straight-sets with 6-1 victories to earn Wheaton the match win with their fourth point.
Gálligo was the next Wheaton player to finish, as he defeated Faulise in the number one singles match. Faulise went down 4-0 early in the first set, but managed to bring himself closer with a pair of points to make it 5-2. Gálligo closed the door swiftly with a point to take the initial set 6-2. It was an easier time for the Wheaton junior in the second set as he downed Faulise 6-0 to win in straight-sets.Â
Munoz faced resistance from Pinto as they battled it out in the first set. Munoz came out on top with a 6-4 win, but Pinto flipped the script in the second set with a 6-4 win of his own. The tie-breaking set was won by Munoz with ease as he trounced his way to a 10-4 win in the number two singles match.Â
Berteaux also had to battle for a win in the number three position. Jensen came out on top after a prolonged first set that required a tiebreaker. Berteaux was able to take a 6-4 win in the second set to force a tie-breaking set, which he also won 10-8. The longest match of the day went his way to complete the match sweep for Wheaton.
Wheaton will play their final home match against Emerson on Wednesday at 4:00 pm. Salve Regina will head to Springfield College for a conference match on Sunday at 1:30 pm.Â
