Men's Tennis Battles Back for 4-3 Win Versus St. Scholastica

Box Score ORLANDO, Fla. - The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team came from behind to defeat the College of St. Scholastica 4-3 to kick off their trip to Florida on Sunday afternoon.

Wheaton improves to 3-2 on the season while St. Scholastica falls to 6-2 on the year with the loss.

Wheaton struggled in the doubles to start the day as the first and second doubles pairings both lost. Junior Jaime Gálligo (Madrid, Spain) and first year Landon Wyshner (Winston Salem, N.C.) were tripped up in the first doubles as they fell 6-3 to the Saints pairing of first year Mateo Torre Antezana (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and junior Dane Patten (Duluth, Minn.). Junior Paul Berteaux (Paris, France) and sophomore Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) also fell in the doubles match, falling 6-2 to the Saints tandem of senior Andy Shaffer (Buffalo, Minn.) and first year Daniel Torres Herrera (Bogota, Colombia) to earn St. Scholastica the doubles point. Juniors Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) and Jack Thain (Aberdeen, Scotland) were able to win their match despite a late surge from Saints sophomore Timon Herrmann (Karlsruhe, Germany) and sophomore Jose Naranjo Rodriguez (Brisbane, Australia), claiming a 7-5 victory.

Munoz would lose in straight-sets from the second singles to Finn Schulze Topphoff (Ostbevern, Germany) to give the Saints another point and a 2-0 lead. Junior Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) won his first set from the sixth singles, but dropped the following two to Naranjo, putting the Saints on the verge of victory at 3-0.

Gálligo gathered the first point for Wheaton with a strong win against Torre Antezana. Despite dropping the first set 6-3, Gálligo rattled off 6-1 and 6-0 wins to claim victory in the first singles. Wyshner took down Torres Herrera in straight-sets (6-4, 7-5) to bring Wheaton within one point of the Saints at 3-2.

Berteaux faced a seemingly steep hill to climb after dropping his first set to senior Harper Dircks (Hopkins, Minn.) 6-0, but was able to rattle off a 7-6 win before clinching the third set for the tying point from fourth singles. Murray took on junior Drew Anderson (Hibbing, Minn.) in the deciding match in the fifth singles. He was pushed to the very edge in the first set, but held on to win 7-6. The second set was much easier as he cruised to a 6-1 win to clinch victory for the Lyons.

Wheaton will stay in Florida as they take on Transylvania University at 8:30 am tomorrow morning in Lakeland, Fla. St. Scholastica will stay in Orlando as they take on Marymount tomorrow.
