Lamond Powers Baseball with Two Blasts in 9-5 Win over Bridgewater State

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Junior center fielder Robbie Lamond (North Kingstown, R.I.) hit a pair of long balls to power the Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team over Bridgewater State University, 9-5, this afternoon at Alumni Park in Bridgewater, Mass.

The game was originally to be played in Norton, but unplayable field conditions necessitated the move to Bridgewater, while keeping the Lyons the home team on the field.

Wheaton improve to 7-2 on the season, while the Bears slip to 5-4.

The Lyons outhit Bridgewater State, 11-7, while both teams committed two errors in the game.

The Bears scored the first two runs of the afternoon in the top of the first before Wheaton tallied eight unanswered runs with two in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth to take an 8-3 margin. The Lyons went on to claim their sixth come-from-behind win of the year.

Lamond becomes the 15th Wheaton player to hit two homers in the same game in program history and second Lyon to do it in the last 12 days after senior Collin Reilly (Marshfield, Mass.) clouted the first two home runs of his career against Wesleyan on March 7. Lamond was 2-4 on the day and knocked in three runs to go with three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. Sophomore right fielder Declan Lush (Seekonk, Mass.) was 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while senior third baseman Ray Toth (Granby, Mass.) was 1-4 with a run batted in. Senior second baseman Marcus Rodrigues (Lincoln, R.I.) contributed with a 2-2 showing that included three runs, a pair of walks and a stolen base. First year relief pitcher Cameron Hasenfus (Norfolk, Mass.) picked up his first win to improve to 1-0 after hurling two scoreless and hitless frames, while issuing just one walk and striking out two batters.

Senior third baseman Ryan Flaherty (Duxbury, Mass.) led Bridgewater State, going 1-3 with three RBI and sophomore left fielder Jamie Luna (Warwick, R.I.) was 1-4 with a run batted in on a double, a run scored and a base on balls. Junior center fielder Rylan Secovich (Southwick, Mass.) contributed with a 1-2 day that saw him score a pair of runs and draw a walk. Senior right-handed starting pitcher Trey Yesu (Monson, Mass.) was saddled with the loss to drop to 0-3 after giving up three runs on six hits and a walk in three innings of work.

Lamond erased a 2-0 first-inning deficit for Wheaton, following a lead-off single from Rodrigues, with a round tripper over the left field fence to knot the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the first. The Lyons took the lead for good when Lush, first year left fielder Brayden Lewis (Hopedale, Mass.) and sophomore designated hitter Logan Downey (Warwick, R.I.) all singled to load the bases with no outs. Toth hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Lush with the go-ahead run in the third inning.

Wheaton took advantage of a pair of errors to score two runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 advantage. Rodrigues opened the frame with an infield single and Reilly reached on a Bear infield throwing error before both runners came around to score on another Bridgewater State  infield throwing error that allowed Lewis to reach base.

The Lyons tacked on three more runs in the fifth to build a comfortable 8-2 cushion. Wheaton loaded the bases again in the fifth when junior catcher Ty Bellan (Franklin, Mass.), Rodrigues and Lamond all worked walks to set up a sacrifice fly off the bat of Reilly to center field to bring home Bellan. Rodrigues tagged and scampered to third on the play, before Lamond stole second to put both runners in scoring position with two outs. Lush delivered a two-run single to the gap in right center to give the Lyons a five run advantage.

The Bears rallied to get three runs back in the top of the seventh to close within 8-5. Bridgewater State threatened to score its first run since the opening frame when senior outfielder DJ Prampin (Worcester, Mass.) reached on an error to begin the inning, stole second and then tried to score on a single to left field, but Lewis' connected with Toth on a throw from left field, before Toth's strike to the plate cut down Prampin with the second out of the inning. Sophomore catcher Zackary Casey (Leominster, Mass.) had reached on an infield single earlier in the inning and Secovich was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Bears. Luna drew a walk to force in a run and Flaherty followed with a two-run single to right to cut the deficit to three.

Lamond capped the day's scoring with his second homer on a solo shot to left to make it 9-5 for Wheaton.

The Lyons return to the diamond on Saturday, March 21 when they host Nichols College in an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader at Millbury High School in Millbury, Mass., while Bridgewater State travels to Milton, Mass. on March 23 to take on Curry College at 3:00 p.m.
