BEVERLY/WENHAM, Mass. – First year Landon Wyshner (Winston Salem, N.C.) captured the championship in the Green Singles bracket to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team today at the North Shore Slam Invitational, co-hosted by Endicott College and Gordon College in Beverly, Mass. and Wenham, Mass., respectively.
Wyshner fell to Endicott sophomore Eric Scalici (Essex Fells, N.J.) in the opening set, 6-2, before coming back to win the final two frames, 6-3 and 10-8 to win the bracket's singles title for the Lyons on Endicott's campus.
Wheaton junior Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) paired with classmate Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) play Emerson College junior Filippo Nocchi (Pontedera, Italy) and first year Adam Alireza (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) in the semifinal match at Gordon, but came up short with an 8-6 loss. The Wheaton pair suffered an 8-4 defeat as well to the Endicott senior duo of Conrad Kadel (Heidelberg, Germany) and Aaron Terpko (Shrewsbury, Mass.) in the Blue Doubles winner's bracket consolation match.
Junior Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) defeated Endicott first year Drew Benporath (South Guilford, Wash.), 8-2, for the Lyons in the Blue Singles consolation bracket final on Endicott's campus.
Wheaton junior Jack Thain (The Woodlands, Texas) took down Endicott senior James Zeolie (Amherst, N.H.) in a consolation consolation match of the White Singles bracket. Thain dropped the opening set, 6-3, but roared back with a 6-1 win to set up a 10-5 decision to take the match on Endicott's campus.
Galligo and Wyshner couldn't match their singles success, falling in the Blue Doubles bracket consolation semifinals to Gordon College senior Jeffrey Bodner (Moncton, N.B.) first year Santiago Diaz (Orlando, Fla.), 8-6. Thain and Lyon first year David Anghinetti (Rehoboth, Mass.) fell to Gordon senior James Wellborn (Abilene, Texas) and first year Jack Makiej (Andover, Mass.), 8-6, in the White Doubles bracket consolation final.
Wheaton returns to the courts on Wednesday, September 17 when it hosts Roger Williams University at 4:00 p.m. on the Clark Tennis Courts.
