ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Senior Jaz Vanderhoof (Portland, Maine) led the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's cross country team, placing 40th at the Suffolk Short Course Classic this morning on the Mark Coogan Cross Country Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass.
The Lyons tallied 329 points to finish 13th as a team in the three-kilometer meet that featured schools from Division I and III.
Northeastern University won the team title with 30 points, bolstered by runners who finished third, fourth, sixth and seventh in the race. University of New Hampshire sophomore Ruth White (Orono, Maine) won the individual crown with a time of 10:59.42.
Wheaton boasted four returning competitors with personal-record 3K times for the day.
Vanderhoof clocked in at 12:03.97 and was followed by sophomore Abby Wozniak (Blackstone, Mass.), who turned in a personal-record mark of 12:31.60 to place 58th. First year Ellie Gilman (Brunswick, Maine) finished 79th in her collegiate debut with a time of 12:51.09, before senior Abby Martin (Keene, N.H.) made her return to the course, following a year off from studying abroad, to post a mark of 13:45.48 and finish 126th. Sophomore Maggie Cizmar (Plymouth, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Lyons with a personal-record time of 13:53.21 to place 130th.
Martin and Cizmar were part of a Wheaton contingent of four, who finished within nine seconds of each other. Sophomore Niyati Hotha (South Brunswick, Maine) recorded a time of 13:54.52 to finish 132nd with first year Norah McLeod (Arundel, Maine) right on her heels at 13:54.96 to place one spot behind her.
First years Sophia Woodcock (Warrington, Pa.) and Caeli Wagner (Hingham, Mass.) each made their respective collegiate debuts in the race for the Lyons. Woodcock clocked in at 14:07.90 to place 142nd, while Wagner placed 147th after crossing at 14:33.31. Juniors Anna Butrimas (Berlin, Conn.) and Annabelle Sanders (Miami, Fla.) both recorded personal-record efforts. Butrimas placed 153rd (15:06.85) and Sanders was 165th at 15:55.25. First year Kaylin Emerson (New Boston, N.H.) finished with a time of 16:37.32 in her first collegiate race and placed 174th.
Wheaton returns next weekend when it heads to nearby Smithfield, R.I. to compete in the Shawn M. Nassaney Invitational hosted by Bryant University on September 6 at 11:15 a.m.
