Box Score DORCHESTER, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team dropped a total of just six games in a 9-0 victory over host University of Massachusetts Boston this afternoon on the Boston College High School courts in Dorchester, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 6-8 on the season, while the Beacons fall to 2-2.
Wheaton swept through doubles play to take a 3-0 lead, before winning all six singles matches for the dual match victory.
The first year tandem of Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) and Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) was nearly perfect against the UMass Boston duo of senior Kevin Kubinec (East Boston, Mass.) and junior Rudraksha Trivedi (Gujarat, India) with an 8-1 decision at number one doubles.
The Lyons did not surrender a game in the other two doubles matches, winning 8-0 in both. First year Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France) and senior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) combined for the triumph at number two doubles over the Beacons tandem of junior Felix Nguyen (Worcester, Mass.) and first year Thomas Tran (Malden, Mass.). Wheaton's first year pairing of Jack Thain (The Woodlands, Texas) and Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) also served up a win at third doubles over UMB's first year combo of Matthew Perez (San Francisco, Calif.) and Shrenith Saravana Rakshana (Bangalore, India).
The lower part of the Lyons' lineup was unblemished for the day, winning fourth, fifth and sixth singles in straight set, 6-0, 6-0, fashion. Hanlon was the victor at number four singles over Nguyen, while Van Dyke recorded a win at fifth singles over Saravana Rakshana. Thain came out on top at number six singles over Beacon first year David Flores (Malden, Mass.).
Galligo cruised to a 6-1 first set victory at number one singles for Wheaton, before Trivedi was unable to continue the match with the second frame tied 1-1. Berteaux made quick work of Kubinec at second singles for the Lyons, 6-0, 6-1 and Murray posted a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at number three singles over Tran.
Wheaton returns to the courts on Saturday, April 13 when it hosts New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Salve Regina University at 2:00 p.m. in a match scheduled for the Clark Tennis Courts, while UMass Boston hosts University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on April 11 at 12:00 p.m.
