Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team was downed by host United States Coast Guard Academy, 8-1, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play in New London, Conn.
The Lyons finish their season with a 7-10 overall record, including 2-5 in league play, while the Bears improve to 9-5 and 4-2. Coast Guard earned the third seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Championship Tournament and will face number two seed Babson College on April 22 in Babson Park, Mass. in the NEWMAC Semifinals at 12:00 p.m.
Wheaton gained its only point at number six singles. Senior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, over Coast Guard sophomore Benjamin Carlander.
Hanlon joined junior Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) in a battle at number three doubles, succumbing 8-6 to the Bear duo of sophomore Brendan Love (Winchester, Va.) and first year Noah Reice (Wilmington, Dela.).
Coast Guard won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead in the dual match. Senior Myles Decoste (Stuart, Fla.) teamed with classmate Charles Norman (Aurora, Ohio) to post an 8-1 victory at number one doubles over the Lyon first year tandem of Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) and Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.). Senior Sean Dreher (Harker Heights, Texas) combined with first year Benjamin Bonetto (Bend, Ore.) to record an 8-4 win for the Bears over the Wheaton first year combo of Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France) and Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.).
Decoste was a double-winner for Coast Guard turning in a 6-2, 6-0 straight set win at first singles over Galligo, while Norman dropped three games in a 6-0, 6-3 win at second singles for the Bears over Berteaux.
Dreher cruised in the opening set at number three singles, 6-0, before Murray battled in the second frame for the Lyons, despite Dreher holding on for a 6-4 win. Bonetto picked up a win at fourth singles for the Bears, 6-2, 6-3, over Van Dyke for the Lyons. Senior Logan De Los Santos (Tulsa, Okla.) also won in singles play for the home team with a 6-1, 6-4 decision at fifth singles over Wheaton first year
