Men's Tennis Upended at Clark, 6-3

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) was a double-winner to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team in a 6-3 loss at host Clark University this afternoon in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference dual match at Corash Tennis Courts in Worcester, Mass.

The Lyons dip to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in NEWMAC play, while the Cougars improve to 8-4 and 1-2.

Clark won two of three doubles to take a 2-1 edge heading into singles action. The Cougars won three of the first four singles matches completed to secure the win and went on to take four of six.

Bor earned wins in both doubles and singles play for Wheaton. The junior combined with first year Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) to earn an 8-6 win at number three doubles over the Clark pairing of sophomore Graham Russo (Bridgewater, Mass.) and first year Adham Seraj (Falls Church, Va.). Bor also registered a straight set triumph at fifth singles over junior Ryan Hovey (Newburgh, N.Y.) with scores of 6-3, 6-4.

Senior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) was a winner in singles play for the Lyons, recording a gutsy three set victory at number six. Hanlon dropped the opening set, 6-2, to Seraj, but came back to win the middle frame, 6-4, before winning the third set, 6-3.

The Cougars cruised at number one doubles with an 8-0 result behind sophomore Edward Shepherd-Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) and first year Aris Kirkorian (Sunnyside, N.Y.) over Wheaton first year Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) and Hanlon. Shepherd-Johnson took the first set at first singles over Galligo in singles play, 6-3, before outlasting his younger foe, 7-6 (6) in the second set for the win and the dual-match's deciding fifth point. Kirkorian was also a winner in singles play for Clark, earning a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Lyon first year Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France).

The Wheaton first year tandem of Berteaux and Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) endured a grueling battle at number two doubles against senior Tanner Honnef (Camarillo, Calif.) and Hovey, playing to a 7-7 stalemate, before the Cougar duo edged the Lyons, 9-7, in the tie-breaker. In addition, Honnef added a singles triumph to his day, taking number three singles over Murray, 6-1, 6-3, for Clark.

Russo shook off his loss in doubles play and rebounded with a three-set victory at fourth singles for the Cougars over Van Dyke. Russo claimed the opening set, 6-3, before Van Dyke countered with a 6-3 result in the second frame. The two were the last ones on the court in a third set that was decided, 7-5, in Russo's favor.

Wheaton returns to the courts on Friday, April 5 when it travels to Springfield, Mass. to take on NEWMAC foe Springfield College at 3:30 p.m., while Clark heads to New London, Conn. to play United States Coast Guard Academy in a conference tilt on April 6 at 1:00 p.m.
