Box Score ORLANDO, Fla.. – First year Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain), senior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) and junior Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) were double-winners to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team over Emerson College, 8-1, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
The Lyons improve to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Lions fall to 3-6 and 0-2.
Wheaton's only loss on the day came in doubles action at number two. The Lyons took a 2-1 lead into singles play, before sweeping all six matches.
Galligo and Hanlon combined on a hard-fought 8-7 (2) win at number one doubles for the Lyons over the Emerson pair of first year Filippo Nocchi (Pontedera,Italy) and sophomore Leo Ishizuka (Kawasaki, Japan). Both players captured singles victories as well for Wheaton. Galligo had little trouble at first singles over Nocchi, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 outing. Hanlon won at number five singles, 6-0, 6-3 over sophomore Noah Mesaros (Boise, Idaho).
Bor combined with Wheaton first year Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) to earn an 8-5 result at number three doubles over Mesaros and first year Finn Leeves-Coben (Malibu, Calif.). Bor extended his winning ways to fourth singles, taking the opening set, 7-5, before easing into a 6-2 win to take the match over first year Lorenzo Almeida (Curitiba, Brazil)..
Lyon first year Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France) showed poise, coming back to win the third set, 10-5 in pro-set form, after dropping the middle set, 7-6 (3) to junior Pete Sevikul (Bangkok, Thailand). He opened the match at second singles with a 6-4 effort. Classmate Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) cruised at third singles with a 6-2, 6-3 straight set win over Ishizuka. First year Jack Thain (The Woodlands, Texas) also gained a win in singles action with a 6-0, 6-3 showing at number six over Emerson Leeves-Coben.
The Lions notched their only point of the afternoon at number two doubles behind Sevikul and Almeida, who posted an 8-4 win over Berteaux and Murray.
Wheaton returns to action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. when it takes on Division II foe Emporia State University at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla.., while the Lions host Springfield College on March 23 in NEWMAC play.
