Haraj-Sai, Hollis Capture NEWITT "C" Draw Crown to lead Women's Tennis

NORTHAMPTON/AMHERST, Mass. -- The sophomore duo of Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) won the "C" Draw Championship to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team today at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament co-hosted by Smith College and Amherst College in Northampton and Amherst, Mass., respectively.

The tournament pits a pair of players from each school to play a doubles match and two singles matches with the winner advancing after winning the best of three points.

Haraj-Sai and Hollis combined to win three separate pods during the day to capture the title on the Smith campus in Northampton.

The Lyon pair began the day with a dominant 8-1 doubles win over the Emerson College pairing of junior Jayden Beverly (Dupont, Wash.) and first year Sidra Sundberg (Spring Arbor, Mich.). Wheaton swept through singles play as well. Hollis cruised with a 6-1, 6-1 effort over Sundberg, while Haraj-Sai also won in straight sets over Beverly, 6-1, 6-4.

The Lyon tandem advanced to the draw's semifinals and pulled out a singles and a doubles win over Gordon College to play for the championship. Haraj-Sai and Hollis put together an 8-3 triumph over sophomore Chloe Hanley (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and first year Gianna Hallam (Williamsville, N.Y.). Hollis did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 showing against Halam, but Hanley picked up the point for the Fighting Scots with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Haraj-Sai.

Wheaton drew Smith College in the final, but an injury to one of the Pioneers gave the Lyons a single point as well as a doubles point for the win. First year Tabitha Bastress (Charlotte, Vt.) won in singles action over Haraj-Sai, 8-2, to gain Smith's only point of the pod.

Wheaton's junior tandem of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) fell in the quarterfinals of the "B" draw on the Amherst campus in Amherst, Mass. to Tufts University . Sophomore Evelina Anastasi (Limassol, Cyprus) and first year Nadia Khera (Houston, Texas) combined for an 8-6 win in doubles play. Khera downed Greenlee, 6-1, 6-0 in singles, while Anastasia posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ortiz.

The Lyons' third team was upended in the quarterfinals of the "C" draw at Smith by Bates College. Sophomore Elise Hepburn (Vero Beach, Fla.) and first year Mya Vincent (Auburn, Maine) turned in an 8-3 doubles win over Wheaton sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) and first year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.). Brennan fell to Vincent, 6-4, 6-2, in singles play, while Lyon junior Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) was defeated by Hepburn, 6-1, 6-0.

Wheaton returns to the courts in the spring when it travels to Medford, Mass. to play Tufts on Sunday, March 2 at 10:00 a.m.
