Women's Tennis Thwarted by Smith, 7-0

NORTON, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was defeated by visiting Smith College, 7-0, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Clark Tennis Courts on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons dip to 9-8 overall and 3-4 in league play, while the Bears improve to 7-8 and 4-3.

Smith boasted four double winners in the dual match.

The Bears earned the doubles point by taking two of three matches. Smith's first year duo of Heidi Cambron (Sherbrooke, Canada) and Ava Emrich (Smyrna, Del.) combined for a 6-2 triumph at number one doubles over Wheaton's senior tandem of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas). Junior Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore Natazya Simunyola (Lorton, Va.) teamed for a 6-2 Bears' win at second doubles over the Lyons' junior combination of Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda). Wheaton prevented a sweep in doubles play with a win at the number three spot. Junior Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) paired with first year Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.) for a 6-4 result over Smith senior Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, N.J.) and junior Sophia Dube (Portland, Ore.).

The Bears did not drop a set in singles play with all six of their singles players not dropping more than three games in any frame. Hauser posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Greenlee at number one to clinch the match with the fourth point, while Emrich surrendered just one game at second singles against Haraj-Sai. Cambron dropped just one game at number three singles in a 6-1, 6-0 effort against Ortiz.

The lower part of Smith's lineup did its part as well with Simunyola earning a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hollis at fourth singles and junior Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China) turning in a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Robinson at number five singles. Sophomore Tabitha Bastress (Shelburne, Vt.) registered a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lyon first year Lily Runyan (New Milford, Conn.), 6-3, 6-2.

Wheaton will return to the courts on Saturday, April 25 when it hosts Wellesley College at 12:00 p.m., while the Bears play on the same day when they host NEWMAC rival Emerson College at noon as well.
