Women's Tennis Falls to Wellesley on Senior Day, 7-0

Box Score NORTON, Mass -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team celebrated its two seniors, Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas), as it ook on Wellesley in the final New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference contest of the regular season. The Lyons fell, 7-0, to the Blue in their last match in Norton this season. 

Wheaton dips to 9-9 overall and 3-5 in the NEWMAC with the loss, while Wellesley improved to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the NEWMAC with the win. 

Greenlee and Ortiz were first to finish after their senior day celebrations opened up the match. They were held back by the blue duo of first year Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) and junior Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) and fell in the number one doubles, 6-1. Juniors Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) suffered the same fate for the Lyons as they fell in the number two doubles match to sophomore Rianna Mariotti (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and sophomore Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) 6-1. 

The Blue completed the sweep at doubles play at number three.  Junior Lily Cade (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior Dalia Khara (Houston, Texas) notched a 6-1 decision over  Wheaton first year Amelie Robinson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.).

Robinson was first to finish her singles match as she fell in straight-sets to first year Praslin Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) 6-1 and 6-1. Ortiz completed her match with first year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) in the number three position next. She also fell in straight-sets, 6-1 and 6-1 as Bian cruised ahead for a 3-0 lead for Wellesley. 

Junior Isaballa Cottrell (Melrose, Mass.) completed her match at number six singles next for the Lyons. She pushed junior Vedha Madhusudan (Short Hills, N.J.) in the first set, but ultimately fell 6-2. Madhusudan pushed back in the second set as she took down Cottrell 6-0 to clinch the win for Wellesley. 

Greenlee suffered a similar fate in the number one singles match. Xu powered forward in the first set as she took a 6-0 win, but Greenlee was able to claw back two games to make it 6-2 in the second. 

Hollis also fell in straight-sets to junior Kritti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) 6-1 and 6-2, leaving Haraj-Sai in the number two singles as the only player in the way of a Wellesley sweep. She took the longest to finish as she fell in the first set 6-2 to sophomore Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.). The Wheaton junior suffered the same fate in the second set, as a 6-2 win gave a 7-0 victory to Wellesley.

Wheaton will take on Trinity College (Conn.) tomorrow at 1:00 pm in their final regular season outing. Wellesley will face Wheaton in round one of the NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championship Tournament on April 28th at 5:00 pm.
