NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — All three of the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis pairings advanced to tomorrow's Quarterfinal Round of the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament this afternoon at host Smith College in Northampton, Mass.
The tournament consists of teams playing in pairs, competing in doubles and singles matches.
Wheaton's duo of sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) and first year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) picked up an 8-6 win in doubles play in the "C" draw over Emerson College sophomore Kendi Bispham (Tortola, British Virgin Islands) and junior Carlson Jones (Cleveland, Ohio). The Lyons advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins in the singles portion of competition between the teams. Brennan picked up a win in singles play over Bispham, 6-3, 7-5, while junior Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) earned the victory for the Lyons in the other singles match against Jones, 6-3, 7-5. The Wheaton pair advances to play Bates College tomorrow.
Wheaton's other "C" draw entry of sophomore Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and classmate Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) advanced to the quarterfinals after winning two of the three points. The Wheaton tandem posted an 8-6 win in doubles action over the Smith duo of junior Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, N.J.) and first year Alexa Konstantopoulous (Waltham, Mass.). Hollis gave the Lyons the pod with a three-set singles win over Caluna. Hollis rebounded after dropping the opening set, 6-3, to capture the final two frames, 6-2, 10-3. Konstantopoulous downed Haraj-Sai, 6-0, 6-2, in the other singles match. Wheaton advances to play Emerson in its quarterfinal match-up tomorrow.
The Lyons will also have juniors Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) in action in tomorrow's quarterfinals of the "B" draw after advancing with a walkover.
The "C" draw matches will be played at Smith, while the "B" draw contests will be featured at Amherst College in Amherst, Mass. tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
