The first year duo of Jaime Galligo (Ciudalcampo, Spain) and Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) dropped just one game for the Lyons in an 8-1 victory over the sophomore Saint Joseph tandem of Marko Karpyuk (Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine) and Mateus Silvestre (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) at number one doubles. Junior Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) and first year Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) breezed through third doubles over the USJ combo of senior Tyler Hussey (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and junior Jonathan Huot (South Windsor, Conn.) by a count of 8-3. The most competitive doubles contest of the day came at the number two spot with Wheaton senior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) pairing with first year Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France) in a win following an 8-7 battle that was tied at 7-7 before an 11-9 tie-breaker won the deciding point over sophomore Noah Rivera (Armonk, N.Y.) and first year Christian Kaverud (Glastonbury, Conn.) for the Blue Jays.
Galligo continued his momentum into singles play, dominating at the top spot by a score of 6-0, 6-0 over Rivera, while Berteaux rolled at number three singles with a 6-1, 6-2 straight set triumph over Karpyuk. Van Dyke also had little trouble in singles action for the Lyons, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win at fifth singles over sophomore Ryan Boucher (Bedford, N.H.).
Hanlon was the fourth double-winner for Wheaton, but had to earn it in three sets over Silvestre at number four singles. Hanlon won the opening frame, 6-4, before Silvestre answered with an impressive 6-1 showing in the middle set. Hanlon regrouped and took the third set in a tie-breaker at 10-7. First year Jack Thain (The Woodlands, Texas) also scored for the Lyons with a gritty three-set win at sixth singles over sophomore Brett Hodas (East Berlin, Conn.). Hodas won the first set 6-4, but Thain came right back with a 6-4 decision of his own in set number two to knot the match and force the deciding tie-breaker. Thain outlasted his host by a count of 11-9 to take the frame and the match.
Kaverud managed to register the only point for Saint Joseph with a three-set victory at second singles over Murray. Kaverud earned a 6-4 opening set win, before Murray matched him with a 6-4 win of his own in the middle frame. The USJ rookie put together a 10-6 triumph in the tie-breaker to gain the win and the lone point for the Blue Jays.
Wheaton returns to the court on Friday, September 29 when it travels to Brunswick, Maine to compete in the two day Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championship at host Bowdoin College, while Saint Joseph hosts Salve Regina University on September 30 at 12:00 p.m.
