Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. –- Senior catcher Robert Wirtanen (Brentwood, N.H.) and first year Nick Giangregorio (Belmont, Mass.) each knocked in a pair of runs to lead the No. 11/14 Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team to a 7-3 victory over host Roger Williams University this afternoon at Paolino Field in Bristol, R.I.
The Lyons, who are ranked 11th in the most recent D3baseball.com national poll and 14th in the Collegiate Baseball/American Baseball Coaches Association survey, have won nine straight, 17 of their last 18 and 27 of their last 29 games and improve to 33-5 on the season for their highest win total since 2012 when they were 41-11. The Hawks fall to 12-22.
Both teams scored two runs apiece in the first inning, before Wheaton scored three times in the third to take the lead for good at 5-2. Each side scored a single run in the sixth to make it 6-3, before the Lyons capped the day's scoring with a run in the ninth. Wheaton rapped out 15 hits to mark the 27th time this season that the Lyons have rung up double-digit hit totals.
Wirtanen was 2-4 with a double and two RBI for Wheaton, while Giangregorio was 2-4 with a home run, two runs batted in and a run scored. Seniors Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) and Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) were two of six Lyons with multiple hits, with each collecting three hits in the game and driving in a run. Maher belted a homer and scored three times. Sophomore left fielder Kevin Matos (Lawrence, Mass.) was 2-3 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Junior lefty reliever Matthew Pizzelli (Weymouth, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate victory with a third of an inning of scoreless ball. Right-handed starting pitcher Jackson Walsh (Cumberland, R.I.) allowed two runs on six hits and three walks to go with a pair of strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings of work.
Senior center fielder Matt Falvey (Walpole, Mass.) led Roger Williams at the plate, going 2-5 with a run batted in and a run scored, while junior London Camelo (Bristol, R.I.) was 2-4 with an RBI. Junior second baseman Nick Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) and sophomore shortstop Ethan Keeney (Harwich, Mass.) were both 1-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored. Sophomore starting pitcher Lucas Lariviere (Cumberland, R.I.) suffered the loss, falling to 1-3 after allowing six runs on 14 hits and a walk to go with five strikeouts.
The first three batters in the Wheaton lineup all reached base to begin a two-run first inning to give the visitors a 2-0 lead before the Hawks picked up a bat. Junior center fielder AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) worked a leadoff walk, before Maher singled to right field to put runners on the corners. Croteau laced a single through the right side to put Maher on third and drive in Guindon with the game's first run. Matos later singled to center to plate Maher with the second Lyon run.
Roger Williams loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the frame, but were limited to two runs to keep it a tie game at 2-2. Falvey opened the frame with a single, before Sheehan ripped a double down the left field line and senior Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) drew a walk to load the bases. Walsh was able to induce a double play for Wheaton with the Hawks scoring their first run on the play. Camelo followed with an RBI single through the left side to knot the game at two runs apiece for Roger Williams.
The Lyons rapped out five hits in the third to fuel a three-run inning and take a 5-2 lead. Maher and Croteau began the frame with back-to-back singles, before Matos singled down the right field line to load the bases with one out. Wirtanen came through with a two-run double to plate Maher and Croteau and give Wheaton a 4-2 margin. Giangregorio followed with a run-scoring single to drive in the Lyons' fifth run of the day.
Wheaton tacked on another run in the sixth when Giangregorio belted his fifth roundtripper of the season to give the Lyons a 6-2 lead. The Hawks answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 6-3. Keeney drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored ahead of a Falvey single.
Maher capped the scoring with his second homer of the season in the top of the ninth to increase Wheaton's advantage to 7-3.
The Lyons return to action for their regular-season finale tomorrow at Sidell Stadium, hosting Westfield State University for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch, while Roger Williams heads to Dartmouth, Mass. on May 4 to take on University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m.
