No. 17 Baseball Rallies to Defeat Springfield to Complete Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. -- The No. 17 Wheaton College Baseball team rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to come away with a 4-3 victory over visiting Springfield College to gain a doubleheader sweep in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action this afternoon at Sidell Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons, who are ranked in the most recent D3baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national polls, improve to 18-4 overall and 5-0 in league play, while the Pride fall to 7-13-1 and 1-4.

Sophomore first baseman Anthony Teberio (Andover, Mass.) collected three hits in four at-bats and junior right fielder Amedeo Ucci (Warwick, R.I.) knocked in a pair of runs to lead Wheaton in the nightcap. Senior right-hander Zach Clesas (Johnston, R.I.) earned the victory to improve to 3-1 with six innings of ball that saw him scatter nine hits and allow three runs, while fanning four batters without giving up a walk. The Lyon bullpen stayed true to form with three more innings of scoreless ball on just one hit. Senior southpaw Zach Nichols (Chicopee, Mass.) picked up his third save of the season after getting the final two outs, including a strikeout.

The Pride rapped out 10 hits in game two, including a 3-4 effort from senior Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) to go with an RBI. Senior Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) was 2-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs batted in and a run scored and senior Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) added two more hits and a pair of runs scored. Junior right-handed starter Connor Caverly (South Berwick, Maine) surrendered just one run on three hits and four walks in addition to six strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings for Springfield. First year lefty reliever Nathan Kelleher-Mochak (Florence, Mass.) suffered the defeat after yielding three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk to go with a strikeout to dip to 1-1.

Wheaton rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for the first time in the game, leading to a one-run victory. The first four batters all reached for the Lyons with senior catcher Robert Wirtanen (Brentwood, N.H.) working a leadoff walk, followed by a single from Teberio to put runners on first and second. Sophomore designated hitter Tommy Beauregard (Salem, Mass.) reached on an error by the catcher on a sacrifice bunt, which allowed Wirtanen to score and pull the Lyons to within 3-2. Ucci came through with a double to left center to plate Teberio with the tying run, before Beauregard scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior second baseman Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) to center field to give Wheaton the lead for good.

The Pride threatened to tie the contest in the seventh with a runner on third, but junior lefty reliever Matthew Pizzelli (Weymouth, Mass.) came on for the Lyons to retire the final batter of the inning with a ground out.

Springfield wasted no time to grab a two-run lead in the top of the first. Traversa slapped a single up the middle, Barrett doubled down the right field line to score him and Maynard followed with a single to give the Pride a 2-0 lead just three batters into the game. Clesas induced a much-needed double play and got another ground out to end the threat for Wheaton.

Springfield tacked on another run in the third to take a 3-0 margin, thanks to Traversa and Barrett again. Traversa roped a single to right field, before Barrett doubled again in as many at-bats to bring around Traversa with the Pride's third run of the contest.

The Lyons looked to get all the runs back in the fourth when they loaded the bases with two outs, but were limited to just a run to cut the deficit to 3-1. Brady opened the frame with a walk, Teberio singled and Beauregard also worked a walk to load the bases. Ucci continued the parade of patience with a walk of his own to force in Wheaton's first run of the game.

The Lyons return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 11 when they host Clark University for a 3:30 NEWMAC first pitch at Sidell Stadium, while Springfield hosts league rival Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the same day at the same time.
