Box Score NORTON, Mass. — The No. 11/14 Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team rapped out 13 hits and senior second baseman Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) and first year catcher Nick Giangregorio (Belmont, Mass.) each drove in three runs in a 14-5 victory over visiting Trinity College (Conn.) this afternoon at Sidell Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons, who are ranked 11th in the most recent D3baseball.com national poll and 14th in the Collegiate Baseball/American Baseball Coaches Association survey, have won five straight, 13 of their last 14 and 23 of its last 25 games and improve to 29-5 on the season, while the Bantams fall to 18-12.
Wheaton has registered double-digit runs in 16 games for the most contests with 10 or more runs since the 2011 campaign and has totaled double-digit hits on 24 occasions this season.
The Lyons scored five runs over the first two innings, including three in the bottom of the first, before Trinity got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-2. Wheaton matched the visitors with two runs in the bottom of the frame and scored seven runs in the final two innings to put the game away.
Maher was 1-3 with a double and a run scored for the Lyons, while Giangregorio drew a walk, scored two runs and hit his fourth home run in just 28 plate appearances for the season. Sophomore left fielder Kevin Matos (Lawrence, Mass.) was 3-4 with a run batted in, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases, while junior center fielder AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) was 3-3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore first baseman Timmy Wagner (Hingham, Mass.) clouted his first collegiate home run to go with a walk and two runs scored. First year right-handed starting pitcher Benjamin Oliveira (Somerset, Mass.) picked up the win to run his record to a perfect 4-0 after giving up one run on four hits and two walks to go with a pair of strikeouts in five innings of work.
Senior center fielder Brandon Chow (Greenwich, Conn.) and junior catcher Yoshi Omi-Jarrett (Mill Valley, Calif.) each collected a pair of hits, knocked in a run and scored a run to lead the Bantams' offense. First year starting pitcher Kody Perry (Greenbrae, Calif.) was saddled with the loss to fall to 4-1 after allowing seven runs on eight hits and six walks in addition to a strikeout in five and a third innings of work.
Wheaton scored three times in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Guindon opened the frame with a single through the left side and scored on a double down the left field line off the bat of Maher. Senior third baseman Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) drew a walk for the first of four times that he reached base safely and senior shortstop Cavan Brady (Sheffield, Mass.) belted a double to left to plate Maher to give the Lyons a two-run margin. Croteau later scored on a ground out.
Wheaton added two more runs in the second to increase its lead to 5-0. Wagner drew a leadoff walk and Guindon was hit by a pitch before Croteau plated both runners with a two-out double to right center to give the home team five runs.
Neither team scored again until the sixth inning when the teams traded two runs apiece to keep it a five-run lead in the Lyons' favor at 6-2.
Senior second baseman Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.) ripped a double down the left field line to open the inning, before senior designated hitter Andrew Tuozzolo (Pittstown, N.J.) dumped a single into right field to score Dillon with Trinity's first run. One out later Omi-Jarrett laced a two-out single through the left side to bring hom Tuozzolo and cut the margin to 5-2.
Wheaton answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, including Wagner's first career blast just inside the left field foul pole. Maher drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to give the home team a 7-2 lead.
The Bantams pulled to within 7-3 after their half of the seventh, thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of first year shortstop Tyler Bernstein (Ponte Vedre, Fla.).
The Lyons broke the game open with four runs in the seventh to take a comfortable 11-3 advantage. Wheaton loaded the bases with no outs when Matos reached on a bunt down the third base line, senior Robert Wirtanen (Brentwood, N.H.) singled and Giangregorio was one of seven batters in the game to get hit by a pitch to bring the sacks full. Junior right fielder Tommy Ambrosone (Hopkinton, Mass.) was also hit by a pitch, which forced in a run. Guindon drove in a run with a single to right and Maher was hit by a pitch to force in another run.
Trinity crossed the plate twice in the eighth inning to pull to within 11-5. First year right fielder Andrew Park (Flushing, N.Y.) and Omi-Jarrett struck back-to-back one-out singles and first year left fielder Dylan Schnitzer (Huntington, N.Y.) drew a walk to load the bases. Chow worked a base on balls to push home the Bantams' fourth run and another run scored on a ground out to give the visitors five runs.
Giangregorio capped the offense for Wheaton with a three-run homer over the left field fence to score Matos, who was hit by a pitch and Wirtanen, who worked a walk.
The Lyons return to action tomorrow when they host Babson College in the first game of a three-game New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference series, while Trinity heads to Williamstown, Mass. to take on Williams College tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. to begin their New England Small College Athletic Conference series.
