No. 15 Baseball Falls to Coast Guard, 8-6

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. -- The United States Coast Guard Academy baseball team scored two runs to tie the game in the eighth and two more in the ninth to come away with an 8-6 victory over No. 15 Wheaton College (Mass.) this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at Sidell Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons, who are ranked in the most recent Collegiate Baseball/American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com national polls, have their eight-game win streak come to an end as they fall to 24-5 overall and 9-1 in league play. The Bears improve to 12-13 and 5-5.

Sophomore catcher Parker Madden (Ruston, La.) hit a two-run home run to tie the game in the eighth and knocked in three runs to lead Coast Guard. Madden's blast was his third of the year and tied the game at 6-6, before first year third baseman Luke Percifield (Pinellas Park, Fla.) and senior center fielder Blake Carroll (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) each hit solo homers in the ninth to provide the winning margin for Coast Guard.

The Bears scored the first run of the game in the top of the first before Wheaton answered with three runs in the second and two in the third to take a 5-2 margin. Coast Guard cut the deficit to 5-4 with a pair of runs in the fourth, but the Lyons tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a two-run advantage.

Junior center fielder AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) and senior shortstop Cavan Brady (Sheffield, Mass.) each went 1-5 and drove in two runs apiece for Wheaton. Senior catcher Robert Wirtanen (Brentwood, N.H.) knocked in a run and sophomore first baseman Anthony Teberio (Andover, Mass.) smacked a double. Senior lefty reliever Zach Nichols (Chicopee, Mass.) suffered the loss for the Lyons after giving up three runs on two hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts in an inning of work.

Madden was 2-4 with a run scored for the Bears, while Percifield finished the day going 2-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Carroll reached base three times with a pair of walks to go with his solo shot and scored three times. Senior right fielder Justin Stasiak (Effort, Pa.) also contributed with a run-scoring double. First year right-handed reliever Raymond Priddy (Chico, Calif.) earned the win with two innings of no-hit relief, including a strikeout to improve to 4-3 for Coast Guard.

Junior left fielder John Carroll (Yardley, Pa.) worked a one-out walk before Madden homered over the left field fence to knot the game at 6-6 for the Bears. Nichols set the next two Coast Guard batters down on strikes, but the home run was just the beginning of a series of fortunate breaks the Bears would catch in the final two innings.

Wheaton loaded the bases with no outs and looked primed to reclaim the lead. Teberio opened the frame with a double down the left field line before sophomore designated hitter Tommy Beauregard (Salem, Mass.) drew a walk and junior right fielder Amedeo Ucci (Warwick, R.I.) reached on a bunt single to put a Lyon on every base with the top of the order coming up. Priddy came into the game for Coast Guard and brought the right stuff with him, getting the next batter to ground to second, where the second baseman cut the potential run down on a force-out at the plate. Priddy summoned another ground ball that resulted in an inning-ending double play to keep the game tied at 6-6.

Percifield led off the top of the ninth with his first collegiate home run to give the Bears their first lead since the first inning. One out later, Blake Carroll left the yard with Coast Guard's second solo long ball of the inning and third homer of the game over the left field fence to give the visitors an 8-6 lead.

Priddy retired the final three Wheaton batters in order in the ninth to secure the victory for the Bears.

Coast Guard took advantage of two free bases to score the game's first run in the opening frame. Blake Carroll drew a lead-off walk and sophomore second baseman Jack Steel (Medford Lakes, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to set up Madden for an RBI single to left field for a 1-0 lead for the Bears.

The Lyons scored three runs in the second to take a 3-1 lead. Wirtanen came through with a run-scoring single to right field to tie the game at 1-1. Teberio reached on a fielder's choice and first year designated hitter Nick Giangregorio (Belmont, Mass.) was hit by a pitch before Ucci was issued a free pass to load the bases with two outs. Guindon delivered a single to right field to plate two runs and give Wheaton a two-run margin.

Coast Guard got a run back in the third to cut the deficit to 3-2. Blake Carroll worked a lead-off walk and went to second on a failed pick-off attempt, before scoring ahead of a single to right center off the bat of John Carroll with two outs.

The Lyons countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-2 lead. Senior third baseman Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) reached base when the third strike went to the backstop and trotted home on Brady's third home run of the season that landed over the center field fence.

The Bears closed to within a run, scoring twice on four straight hits to open the fourth inning. Sophomore designated hitter Blake George (Bethlehem, Pa.) and junior first baseman Charles Red (Panama City, Fla.) opened the inning with back-to-back singles. The pair looked to move into scoring position on a double-steal, George was cut down at third, leaving Red on second base. Percifield laced a single through the right side to knock in Red and Stasiak belted a double to left center to pull Coast Guard to within 5-4. The Bears looked to do more damage in the inning and take the lead, but Ucci flashed some leather, going up and bringing back a fly ball in right field that went from being a go-ahead round-tripper to the third out of the inning.

Wheaton scored its final run of the day without the benefit of a hit to take a 6-4 lead in the fifth. Croteau was hit by a pitch to open the inning, advanced to second and third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Wirtanen to give the Lyons a two-run lead.

Coast Guard returns to action on April 21 to host NEWMAC foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 3:30 p.m. in the first of a three-game set, while Wheaton heads to Danvers, Mass. to take on conference rival Emerson College at Saint John's Prep for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch in game one of a three-game series.
