Box Score NORTON, Mass. — Senior shortstop Cavan Brady (Sheffield, Mass.) drove in four runs to lead the No. 16/18 Wheaton College baseball team over visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 10-3, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Sidell Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons, who are ranked 16th in the most recent Collegiate Baseball American Baseball Coaches Association national poll and 18th by D3baseball.com, have won nine of their last 10 and 19 of their last 21 to improve to 21-4 overall and a perfect 7-0 in league play, while the Engineers fall to 9-12 and 4-3. Wheaton is off to its best start in conference play since it began the 2013 league slate with a 9-0 mark.
The Lyons scored the first four runs of the game, including two in the fourth, before MIT cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to make it 4-2. Wheaton broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh to take a 10-2 advantage.
Brady was 3-4 with a run scored and registered his third outing with four or more RBI and his 13th game this season with multiple runs driven in for the Lyons, while senior third baseman Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.), sophomore left fielder Kevin Matos (Lawrence, Mass.) and sophomore first baseman Anthony Teberio (Andover, Mass.) all collected a pair of hits, scored a run and knocked in a run apiece. Senior second baseman Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) reached base three times with a single and two walks and scored three runs. Sophomore right-hander Ryan McCarroll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits and no walks, while striking out 11 in six innings to raise his record to 6-1 on the season.
Senior third baseman Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) paced the Engineers with a 3-4 day, including a run scored and a stolen base and junior left fielder Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) doubled and drove in a run to go with a run scored. Senior catcher Jake Sonadres (Torrance, Calif.) finished the day going 2-4 with a run scored. Junior righty starter Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) on 11 hits and three walks to go with three strikeouts in five and a third innings pitched to drop to 2-2 on the season.
Wheaton cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the first with three hits. Junior center fielder AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) laced a single up the middle to open the frame, advanced to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a ground out and completed the circuit around the bases ahead of an RBI infield single from Brady to give the home team a 1-0 edge.
The Lyons took advantage of an error in the second inning to double their lead at 2-0. Wheaton loaded the bases without an out when Teberio reached on an error, sophomore designated hitter Tommy Beauregard (Salem, Mass.) beat out a bunt single and was matched by junior right fielder Amedeo Ucci (Warwick, R.I.), who also registered a bunt single. Maher later reached on a fielder's choice to push Teberio home with the second run.
The Lyons doubled their lead again in the fourth with a pair of runs to take a 4-0 margin. Ucci reached on an infield error and Maher drew a two-out walk before Croteau and Brady stroked back-to-back run-scoring singles to the outfield to plate Ucci and Maher.
MIT got a pair of runs back in the top of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 4-2. Cartwright served a leadoff single into center field, stole second and came around to score on a double down the left field line off the bat of Gumbs. Gumbs went to third on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field from Hood for the visitors' second run.
Wheaton continued its theme of doubling its run total with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a more comfortable 8-2 lead. Maher and Croteau smacked consecutive one-out singles ahead of an RBI single to right center from Brady to give the Lyons a 5-2 lead. Croteau raced home on a wild pitch and Brady later scored on a two-out single through the left side from senior catcher Robert Wirtanen (Brentwood, N.H.) to increase the home team's advantage to 7-2. Teberio followed with a single through the left side to plate the eighth run of the game for Wheaton.
The Lyons tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh to take a 10-2 cushion. Guindon reached base on an error to open the frame, before Maher drew a walk. Both runners stole a base to move into scoring position to set up Brady's nation-leading seventh sacrifice fly of the season to bring home Guindon. Matos followed with a single to right to bring Maher around to score Wheaton's 10th run.
The Engineers scored the final run of the day after they loaded the bases and scored on a double play.
The teams will meet again tomorrow when the three-game set moves to Cambridge, Mass. for a doubleheader at MIT with a Noon first pitch.
