Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Five hitters for the No. 21 Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team collected multiple hits as well as two or more runs batted in as part of a 19-6 victory over host Rhode Island College this afternoon at Pontarelli Field in Providence, R.I.
The Lyons, who are ranked in the most recent D3baseball.com national poll, have won 11 of their last 12 and improve to 13-3 on the season, while the Anchormen fall to 11-8.
Wheaton scored a season-high 19 runs and nine different players scored at least one run or drove in a run. The Lyons were issued 15 walks to come within one of the school record for free passes.
The visitors erased a 4-1 deficit and outscored Rhode Island College, 18-2, over the final seven innings of play.
Junior center fielder AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) was 2-4 with a pair of doubles to register career hits number 100 and 101, while driving in a career-high four runs to go with a walk and three runs scored for Wheaton. Senior second baseman Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) became the 15th player in school history to rap out three or more doubles in a game with three in seven at-bats in addition to three RBI and two runs scored, while senior shortstop Cavan Brady (Sheffield, Mass.) was 2-5 with a pair of doubles to give the Lyons seven extra-base hits for the afternoon and also added three runs batted in and a walk. Sophomore left fielder Kevin Matos (Lawrence, Mass.) and classmate Tommy Beauregard (Salem, Mass.) each reached base three times with a pair of walks and a single and knocked in a pair of runs. Senior third baseman Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) matched his career high with four runs scored in addition to going 2-3 with two walks and a run batted in, while sophomore first baseman Anthony Teberio (Andover, Mass.) collected three hits in five at-bats. Sophomore righty reliever Jackson Walsh (Cumberland, R.I.) picked up the win with two innings of hitless relief with just one walk and a pair of strikeouts to improve to 1-0 on the season as part of a bullpen effort that gave up two runs on four hits and two walks over the final five innings of play.
Senior left fielder Joey Coro (North Providence, R.I.) led the Anchormen offense with four RBI on a 2-5 effort at the plate, while junior right fielder Sean Helfrich (Saunderstown, R.I.) was 1-2 with two runs batted in, two bases on balls and a pair of runs scored. Sophomore first baseman Daniel Trzepacz (Mount Vernon, N.H.) also contributed, going 2-4. Starting sophomore left-handed pitcher Harrison Mansfield (Uxbridge, Mass.) suffered the loss to dip to 0-2 after giving up seven runs on five hits and four walks to go with four strikeouts.
Wheaton exploded for 11 runs with five in the fourth and six in the fifth innings to take a commanding 13-4 lead to put the game out of reach.
Facing a 4-1 margin, the Lyons got a run back in the top of the third to cut the deficit in half when Guindon drew a one-out walk and scored ahead of a Maher double to right center field. Wheaton loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth when senior catcher Robert Wirtanen (Brentwood, N.H.) worked a leadoff walk and Matos and Teberio followed with singles. Beauregard received a free pass to force Wirtanen across the plate to bring the Lyons within a run of their hosts. Guindon struck the big blow with a bases clearing double to right center field to give Wheaton a 6-4 lead. Croteau later singled to bring Guindon around to score the seventh run for the Lyons.
For the second straight inning, Wheaton sent 10 men to the plate, loaded the bases with no outs and for the second consecutive inning five or more runners crossed with a six-run frame for a 13-4 advantage. Matos drew a lead off walk and Teberio and Beauregard each singled to load the bases. Junior right fielder Amedeo Ucci (Warwick, R.I.) reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Matos, before Guindon cracked an RBI double to right to make it 9-4. Maher and Brady both connected with two-run doubles to bring home four more runs for a nine-run cushion.
The Lyons scored twice in the seventh to take a 15-4 lead. Wheaton loaded the bases again when Maher reached on an error, Croteau singled and Wirtanen walked before Matos was issued a base on balls to push another run home. Beauregard followed suit with a run-scoring walk of his own for the Lyons.
Rhode Island College broke up a string of 14 unanswered Wheaton runs when it scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the margin to 15-5. Helfrich worked a one-out walk and Coro later singled to right to bring him around to score.
The Lyons scored four more runs over the final two innings to give them a season-high 19 runs. Wheaton loaded the bases for the fourth time in a span of five innings after first year Marcus Ollivierre (Milton, Mass.) collected his first collegiate hit with a single, followed by walks from Croteau and Wirtanen. Matos was hit by a pitch to force in a run and sophomore Timmy Wagner (Hingham, Mass.) and first year Justin Colpack (Easthampton, Mass.) were both credited with RBI's after a walk with the sacks full to give the Lyons an 18-5 lead. Ollivierre scored Wheaton's final run in the ninth when he reached on an error to open the frame and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Anchormen tallied the last run of the game in the bottom of the ninth after first year Daniel Cascio (East Hampton, Conn.) singled and later scored on a Coro fielder's choice.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 1 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to open the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference slate with a doubleheader against Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Assumption College at 12:00 p.m., weather permitting, while Rhode Island College heads to Keene, N.H. to take on Little East Conference foe Keene State College on Sunday, April 2 in twinbill action at 11:00 a.m.
