Baseball Tops Amherst, 9-5, for 10th Straight

NORTON, Mass. – Senior shortstop Cavan Brady (Sheffield, Mass.) collected a pair of hits and knocked in three runs as part of a 15-hit attack to help the Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team to a 9-5 victory over visiting Amherst College this afternoon at Sidell Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons win their 10th straight game for the ninth-longest streak in school history and the second-longest current streak in Division III. Wheaton improves to 12-2 on the season. The victory extends the Lyons' home win streak to 29 straight games for the longest streak in the nation among any school at any division. The Mammoths fall to 6-3-1.

Wheaton, which received votes in the most recent D3baseball.com national poll, boasted five players with multiple hits and recorded 13 or more hits for the fourth consecutive game and has had 12 or more hits on nine occasions this season. The Lyons scored four runs in the top of the first, before Amherst got on the board with a single run in the fifth. Wheaton added five more runs with two each in the fifth and eighth innings in addition to a single run in the sixth. The Mammoths rallied for three runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth.

Brady was 2-4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and scored a run for the Lyons, while senior third baseman Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) was 3-4 with a double, a run batted in and two runs scored. Sophomore left fielder Kevin Matos (Lawrence, Mass.) scored a pair of runs and was 3-5 with a double at the plate. Sophomore designated hitter Tommy Beauregard (Salem, Mass.) finished the day going 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore right-handed starter Ryan McCarroll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) earned the victory to up his record to 3-1 after allowing an unearned run on five hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts in five-plus innings. 

Sophomore shortstop Ryan McIntyre (Larchmont, N.Y.) led the Amherst offense, going 2-5 with a run batted in and a run scored and sophomore designated hitter Jack Sampedro (Miami, Fla.) smacked a pair of doubles and scored a run from the leadoff spot. Junior first baseman Luke Padian (Katonah, N.Y.) was 2-4 and senior left fielder Jack Dove (Norwalk, Conn.) knocked in a pair of runs. Junior righty starter Nicholas Giattino (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) suffered the loss to drop to 1-1 after allowing four runs on six hits and three walks in addition to five strikeouts in four innings pitched.

Brady singled to bring home senior second baseman Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) with the game's first run and Croteau crossed the plate behind him when the ball was mishandled in right field. Senior catcher Robert Wirtanen (Brentwood, N.H.) followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Brady with the third Wheaton run. Matos and sophomore first baseman Anthony Teberio (Andover, Mass.) followed with back-to-back two-out singles, before Beauregard drew a walk to load the bases. Junior right fielder Amedeo Ucci (Warwick, R.I.) also worked a walk to force in the Lyons' fourth run of the inning.

The Mammoths got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-1. Sophomore center fielder Jack Boyle (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached base on an error and later advanced to third on a wild pitch with two outs. McIntyre followed with an infield single to shortstop to drive in Boyle. 

Wheaton answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-1 margin. Wirtanen reached on an infield single and Matos followed with a double to right center to put both runners in scoring position. Wirtanen scampered home on a wild pitch and Matos scored when Beauregard lifted a fly ball that landed just inside the right field line for an RBI single.

The Lyons tacked on another run in the seventh when Maher opened the sixth with a single to right field and later went to third on a wild pitch, before scoring on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Brady to give the home team a 7-1 advantage.

Amherst got two runs back in the eighth to make it 7-3. McIntyre reached on an infield single to second and Padian and senior left fielder Jackson Reydel (Marion, Mass.) followed with consecutive walks to load the bases with no outs. Dove delivered with a single through the right side to drive in McIntyre and Padian. Wheaton was able to turn a double play, but Reydel scored on the play to pull the visitors to within 7-4.

The Lyons countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double down the right field line from Croteau and a run-scoring single to center from Brady to give Wheaton a five-run cushion at 9-4. 

Sampedro cracked a one-out double and later scored on an error with the final run of the game in the top of the ninth for the Mammoths.

The Lyons return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 28 when they host No. 2 Eastern Connecticut State University for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch at Sidell Stadium, while Amherst hosts Clark University on March 29 at 4:00 p.m.
