NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team was shut out by visiting United States Coast Guard Academy, 9-0, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at the Clark Tennis Courts on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. The Lyons fall to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in NEWMAC play, while the Bears win their fourth straight to improve to 8-2 overall and a perfect 3-0.
Coast Guard swept doubles play and won all six singles matches as well.
Wheaton senior Ian Tracy (San Jose, Costa Rica) won the opening set over sophomore Myles Decoste (Stuart, Fla.), but the Coast Guard first singles player came back to win the second frame, 6-2 and pulled out the third set, 10-3, to win the match.
Decoste paired with classmate Sean Dreher (Harker Heights, Texas) to turn in an 8-4 win at first doubles for Coast Guard over Tracy and junior Josh Anshuetz (West Bloomfield, Mich.). Senior Lucas Arora (Cornwall, N.Y.) joined sophomore Charles Norman (Aurora, Ohio) at number two doubles for an 8-1 Bears' victory over senior Albert Ortega Campos (Malaga, Spain) and junior Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass.) to follow suit. The Coast Guard duo of junior Banks Evans (Clayton, N.C.) and first year Paul Choi (Wheaton, Ill.) completed the sweep at doubles with an 8-4 win at number three over junior Ethan Na (Weatogue, Conn.) and sophomore Elijah Hanlon (Branford, Conn.).
Arora won at fifth singles with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Lyon first year Karl von Weissenbeck (Winchester, Mass.) and Evans notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory at second singles for Coast Guard over Anshuetz.
Norman and Dreher both scored 6-4, 6-4 wins at third and fourth singles, respectively, for the Bears. Norman downed Ortega Campos, while Dreher handed Na a loss. Choi earned a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at number six singles over Wheaton first year Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.).
The Lyons will play again on Wednesday, April 13 when they head to Babson Park, Mass. to play a conference tilt with Babson College at 4:00 p.m., while Coast Guard returns to play on the same day when it hosts NEWMAC rival Emerson College at 3:00 p.m.
