Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. -- First year Anthony Teberio (Andover, Mass.) hit a two-run pinch-hit double in the ninth inning to give the Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team the difference in a 3-1 victory at host Trinity College this afternoon at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium in Hartford, Conn. The Lyons win their eighth straight game to improve to 21-10, while the Bantams fall to 14-14.
Trinity scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the second before Wheaton rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to lead to the win.
Junior third baseman Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) was 2-4 with a double, a run scored and a run batted in and Teberio was 1-1 with a double and RBI for the Lyons. Senior Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.) was 1-4 to extend his hitting streak to six straight games. Sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Liam Goldthwaite (Braintree, Mass.) gave Wheaton seven strong innings, giving up just one run on three hits to go with three strikeouts. Junior righty reliever Max Pierce (Scituate, R.I.) hurled a hitless eighth inning to earn his first collegiate victory and improve to 1-0, before senior right-handed reliever Dom Cunha (Lincoln, R.I.) nailed down the win with a hitless ninth that included a strikeout for his sixth save of the season.
Junior second baseman Andrew Tuozzolo (Pittstown, N.J.) paced the Bantams, going 1-3 with a run batted in, while senior left fielder Colin Mann (Dedham, Mass.) was 1-3 with a run scored. Sophomore first baseman Sean Meth (Sands Point, N.Y.) doubled in three at-bats for Trinity as well. First year left-handed starter Jonathan Link (Holmes, N.Y.) tossed six and two-thirds of shutout baseball and allowed just four hits and two walks, while fanning three batters for the home team. Senior reliever William Simeone (Milton, Mass.) (1-1) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs on two hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts in two innings of work.
The Lyons entered the ninth trailing 1-0 and were down to their last out before junior shortstop Cavan Brady (Great Barrington, Mass.) kept them alive with a bases on balls. Brady stole second base to put himself in scoring position and set up Croteau with a game-tying single to center field to pull Wheaton even at 1-1. Croteau moved to second on a passed ball and junior catcher Robert Wirtanen (Brentwood, N.H.) followed with an infield single to second base to put runners on the corners and keep the inning going. Teberio came to the plate as a pinch-hitter and delivered with a double to left field to bring home Croteau with the go-ahead run and Wirtanen all the way around from first with the third run for a 3-1 margin.
Cunha came on for the Lyons in the bottom of the ninth and set down the three batters he faced to secure the win.
The Bantams got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Mann smacked a one-out single and moved to second on a ground out, before Tuozzolo gave Trinity the early edge with an RBI two-out single.
Wheaton returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 26 when it hosts United States Coast Guard Academy in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference tilt at Sidell Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch, while the Bantams head to Cambridge, Mass. on April 27 to take on Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 4:00 p.m.
