Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- Senior Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.) homered and doubled to knock in three runs and senior starting pitcher Gavin Reily (Bridgewater, Mass.) hurled a three-hit shutout to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team over Emerson College today in the first game of a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader at Sidell Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. The game was played as part of a home twinbill for Emerson. The Lyons win their sixth straight and improve to 19-10 overall and 9-3 in league play, while the Lions fall to 9-19 and 2-10.
DeMattio was 2-3 with and scored a pair of runs for Wheaton, while Reily tossed his second career shutout, allowing just one walk and striking out five in nine complete innings to improve to 5-2 on the season. He set down the minimum of three batters in five different innings. Junior shortstop Cavan Brady (Great Barrington, Mass.) drove in the other two runs for the Lyons and was 1-3.
Senior left fielder Lou Davolio (Worcester, Mass.) paced the Emerson offense with two singles in three at-bats, while junior shortstop Thai Morgan (Waldwick, N.J.) was 1-4. Junior right-handed starting pitcher AJ Ortega (Syracuse, N.Y.) (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on three hits and three walks to go with six strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings of work.
Wheaton cracked the scoring column with a run in the top of the second inning. DeMattio smacked a double to left field to open the frame, before scoring on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Brady to give the Lyons a 1-0 edge.
Wheaton added two runs in the sixth to increase its lead to 3-0. The Lyons loaded the bases with one out after junior second baseman Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch, before junior third baseman Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) was intentionally walked to fill an open first base. Senior right fielder Jake Studley (Barrington, R.I.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases before DeMattio was also hit by a pitch to force in Wheaton's second run. Brady later delivered a two-out run-scoring single to left to give the Lyons a 3-0 margin.
Wheaton tacked on two more insurance runs in the eighth when Studley reached on an error to lead off the inning and DeMattio crushed the first pitch he saw over the center field fence for his second long ball in as many days, fourth in the last five games and sixth of the season to give the Lyons a 5-0 lead.
The Lions threatened to score their only run of the game in the ninth when senior right fielder Quinton Copeland (Houston, Texas) was hit by a pitch and took both second and third base without a throw from Wheaton, before Reily induced a fly out to end the game.
