Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team erased a seven-run deficit for a 10-9 comeback win over visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology in game two of a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader today at Sidell Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. The Lyons improves to 15-10 overall and 6-3 in conference play, while MIT falls to 8-16 and 3-6.
Six batters recorded multiple-hit efforts for Wheaton, including a 2-3 performance with a home run for senior catcher Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.) that resulted in three runs batted in and two runs scored, while first year Anthony Teberio (Andover, Mass.) finished the game going 2-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore center fielder AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.), senior first baseman Drew Spirito (Cranston, R.I.) and junior Cavan Brady (Great Barrington, Mass.) each collected two hits apiece and drove in a run each. Senior Zach Clesas (Johnson, R.I.) (1-1) picked up the win in relief after throwing an inning and a third of hitless ball, while issuing a free pass and striking out a batter. Senior Dom Cunha (Lincoln, R.I.) earned his fourth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning that saw him surrender a single and strike out a batter.
Sophomore Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) led the Engineers' second game effort, going 2-4 with three RBI and two walks, while first year Malachi Soqui's (Castaic, Calif.) and senior Cory O'Shea (Glen Allen, Va.) both collected a pair of hits and knocked in two runs apiece. Junior southpaw reliever Matt Leonard (San Antonio, Texas) (0-4) pitched the final three and two-thirds innings for MIT and allowed three runs on four hits and four walks in addition to three strikeouts in the losing effort.
The Engineers broke out the bats for game two, scoring seven runs by the time Wheaton came up to bat in the bottom of the third. Wheaton began its comeback with three runs in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth and three more in the fifth to knot the game at 7-7. MIT reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth, but the Lyons rallied for three runs to answer the bell last and take a 10-9 edge that stuck.
Wheaton started its dramatic comeback with a loud crack of DeMattio's bat resulting in his third long ball of the year to give the Lyons a pair of runs. Brady pulled Wheaton a run closer with a sacrifice fly later in the frame to make it 7-3. DeMattio continued to be in the middle of the Lyons' fight with a two-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Spirito roped a double to the right center gap to bring home DeMattio with Wheaton's fourth run. Brady was the catalyst for three more runs in the fifth when he led off the inning with a single to left, followed by a Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) single to put runners on the corners. Guindon responded with a run-scoring single to plate Brady with one out, before junior third baseman Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) knocked in both Maher and Guindon with a double to left center to pull the Lyons even.
It didn't take long for the Engineers to reclaim their lead with Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) ripping a double to left field before circling the rest of the bases ahead of Soqui's sixth home run of the year to give the visitors a 9-7 margin.
Once again, DeMattio was in the middle of Wheaton's resiliency effort, bringing home another run with a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game. Teberio came through with one of the biggest hits of his young career, scalding a bases-loaded, two-out single past the third base bag and down the left field line to plate the tying and go-ahead runs to give the Lyons a 10-9 lead.
MIT batted around to put Wheaton in a hole right away with five runs in the top of the second. The frame was keyed by an RBI double from O'Shea and a bases clearing triple from Schoenfeld to give the Engineers a 4-0 margin. Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) drove in the fifth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
O'Shea and Sonandres served as the thorn in the side of the Lyons again in the third with O'Shea driving a pitch through the left side to plate a run and Sonandres drawing a bases loaded walk to force in MIT's seventh run.
The Lyons will be in action again on Tuesday, April 19 when they travel to New London, Conn. to play NEWMAC foe United States Coast Guard Academy at 3:30 p.m., while the Engineers host Worcester Polytechnic Institute on the same day at the same time.
