BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team fell at host No. 26 Babson College, 9-0, today at the Babson Tennis Courts in Babson Park, Mass. The Lyons fall to 3-10 overall and 1-3 in NEWMAC play, while the Beavers, who are ranked nationally in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, improve to 10-4 and 3-0.
Babson swept all three doubles matches and the remaining six singles contests to win the match.
First year Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) breezed in the first set at sixth singles for Wheaton, but Beaver junior Jett Hampton (Lakeway, Texas) evened the match with a 6-2 effort in the middle set before completing the comeback with a 10-7 decision in the third set to take the match.
Senior Ian Tracy (San Jose, Costa Rica) combined with junior Josh Anshuetz (West Bloomfield, Mich.) at number one doubles in an 8-4 loss to the Babson pair of junior Maxwell Conlin (Alameda, Calif.) and Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway). Juniors Parker Law (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Jason Weisman (Claremont, Calif.) did not drop a game in an 8-0 triumph at number two doubles over the Lyon pairing of senior Albert Ortega Campos (Malagra, Spain) and junior Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass.) The Babson sophomore combo of Gabriel Cestero (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Jose Gonzalez (Asheville, N.C.) downed Wheaton junior Ethan Na (Weatogue, Conn.) and sophomore Elijah Hanlon (Branford, Conn.), 8-2, at third doubles.
First year Brady Anderson (Rochester, N.Y.) defeated Tracy in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-3 effort at number one singles for the Beavers, while Weisman owned a 6-1, 6-3 win at second singles over Anshuetz.
Cestero did not surrender a game in the first set of number three singles against Ortega Campos and captured the second frame, 6-2, for the Beavers. Law also gained a win in singles play for Babson, defeating Na at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-3, and Gonzalez turned in a 6-1, 6-3 victory at fifth singles over Lyon first year Karl von Weissenbeck (Winchester, Mass.).
Wheaton returns to the courts on Saturday, April 16 when it hosts NEWMAC foe Springfield College at 1:30 p.m. at the Clark Tennis Courts, while the Beavers head to New London, Conn. to play conference rival United States Coast Guard Academy on April 15 at 3:00 p.m.
