Wheaton Baseball Falls to Springfield, 4-2, in Game One

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team was defeated by host Springfield College, 4-2, this afternoon in game one of a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference twinbill at Archie Allen Field in Springfield, Mass. The Lyons fall to 11-8 and 3-1 in league play, while the Pride improve to 9-13 and 2-2.

Springfield rapped out 12 hits and scored single runs in the sixth and the eighth for the difference in the game.

Senior shortstop Stephen Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) paced the Lyons' offense, getting on base three times with a single and two walks, while junior Cavan Brady (Great Barrington, Mass.) was 1-3 with a walk, a run batted in, a stolen base and a run scored. Junior second baseman Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) also knocked in a run with a single. Senior right-hander Griffin Young (Dover, N.H.) suffered his first loss of the season to drop to 3-1 after allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out four batters in five innings.

Sophomore right fielder Andrew McCarty (Meriden, Conn.) and junior shortstop Joe Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) both collected a pair of hits and knocked in a run each to lead the Pride. Graduate student center fielder Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) finished 2-4 with a double and a run scored and junior left fielder Noah Diamond (Glastonbury, Conn.) recorded a pair of singles. Junior righty Jack DeGirolamo (Newington, Conn.) (3-0) earned the victory in relief, giving up one unearned run on two hits and two walks to go with a pair of strikeouts in three innings. Junior right-handed Starting pitcher Blake Roberge (Warwick, R.I.) gave up a run on five hits and three walks in five innings and struck out two.

Wheaton tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth to make it 2-2. Senior catcher Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.) reached on an error to open the frame, before senior first baseman Drew Spirito (Cranston, R.I.) worked a walk. Quigley singled to load the bases and Brady followed suit with an RBI single to left field to keep the bases loaded with no outs. DeGirolam limited the damage by getting the final three outs to keep the game tied at 2-2.

Springfield wasted no time with its answer as graduate student Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) cracked a leadoff triple to right center and scored on a Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) single to the left center gap to give the Pride a 3-2 edge. Springfield added another run in the same fashion in the eighth when Cooney doubled down the left field line to open the inning and promptly scored on a McCarty single up the middle for a two-run lead for the home team.

The Lyons opened the scoring with a manufactured run in the top of the fifth. Brady drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out to the right side and scored on a fielder's choice for a 1-0 edge.
