Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- Sophomores AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) and Will Haskell (Natick, Mass.) each collected three hits and drove in two runs apiece to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team over visiting Rhode Island College, 8-6, this afternoon at Sidell Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. The Lyons improve to 7-6 on the season, while the Anchormen's four-game win streak comes to an end as they fall to 10-5-1.
The teams combined for 14 runs and 21 hits with at least one run being scored through each of the first seven innings by either the visitor or home team.
Guindon was 3-5 with a triple and two runs scored, while Haskell finished the day going 3-4 for Wheaton. First year first baseman Anthony Teberio (Andover, Mass.) was 2-4 with a run batted in and a run scored. Senior starting right-hander Stephen Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) (3-1) earned the win after giving up six runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts in five and a third innings. The Lyons bullpen combined to throw three and two-thirds innings of two-hit scoreless relief, including four outs from senior righty Zach Clesas (Johnston, R.I.) and a scoreless ninth from right-hander Dom Cunha (Lincoln, R.I.) to pick up his second save of the season.
Sophomore right fielder Sean Helfrich (Saunderstown, R.I.) paced Rhode Island College, going 2-4 with a home run and two RBI, while sophomore center fielder Cameron Santerre (Bristol, R.I.) and senior third baseman Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, R.I.) each belted a solo home run on the day. First year Jeren Pimentel (Boston, Mass.) was 2-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Junior right-hander Connor Davey (Cheshire, Conn.) (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and four walks, while striking out three in six and a third innings.
The Lyons scored five runs over the first two innings to take a 5-1 lead. Junior shortstop Cavan Brady (Great Barrington, Mass.) and senior right fielder Jake Studley (Barrington, R.I.) each drew a walk before Haskell delivered the first two runs of the game with a two-out, two-run single to give the home team a 2-0 lead. Grossguth led off the top of the second with a solo shot over the left field fence to cut the deficit in half for the Anchormen.
Wheaton responded right away in the bottom of the frame when junior third baseman Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) and Teberio each singled to open the inning, before Guindon laced a ball to the left-center field fence to drive in both runners and put him on third with a hustle triple. The Lyons tacked on another run to take a 5-1 lead after two innings.
Rhode Island College began the third the same as the second as Helfrich hit a bomb over the center field fence to pull the visitors to within 5-2.
The Anchormen took advantage of two Wheaton errors in the fourth to score a pair of unearned runs. First year Lucas Pierce (Chepachet, R.I.) reached on a one-out single and Pimentel beat out a bunt as the throw hit him and got away, allowing Pierce to score. Pimental later scored when he was essentially picked off after getting caught too far off second, but the lead throw went wide and he came around to score and make it a one-run game.
Wheaton tacked on a single run in the fourth when Guindon laced a one-out single to center and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Studley to give the Lyons a 6-4 lead.
Santerre instantly made it a one-run game again in the fifth with the third leadoff homer of the day for Rhode Island College. Wheaton answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame when junior second baseman Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) singled and later scored ahead of a two-out single up the middle from Teberio to restore the two-run advantage for the Lyons.
The Anchormen continued their theme of getting close, but not close enough, scoring a run in the sixth to pull to within 7-6. Pimental worked a one-out walk, stole second and came around to score when Helfrich drilled a single to center to make it a one-run game again.
Wheaton received an important insurance run in the seventh when senior catcher Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.) opened the inning with a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly to left field from Croteau to give the Lyons an 8-6 lead.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, April 2 when it hosts Worcester Polytechnic Institute for the first of two games in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference twinbill at 12:00 p.m. at Sidell Stadium. Rhode Island College heads to Portland, Maine to play University of Southern Maine on the same day and time for a Little East Conference doubleheader.
