NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team won all three doubles matches as part of an 8-1 dual match victory over visiting Colby-Sawyer College this afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. The Lyons improve to 2-7, while the Chargers dip to 3-7.
Three Wheaton players were double-winners on the day in the win.
Senior Ian Tracy (San Jose, Costa Rica) teamed with classmate Albert Ortega Campos (Malaga, Spain) for an 8-3 win at the top of the doubles lineup over the Colby-Sawyer pair of first year Aidan Jensen (Essex, Vt.) and senior Julius Lowman (Bavaria, Germany). The Lyons received 8-4 wins at second and third doubles to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. Junior Ethan Na (Weatogue, Conn.) combined with sophomore Elijah Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) to overcome the Chargers' first year pair of John Turner (Perry, Maine) and Jan Ullmann (Baden-Wuerrttemberg, Germany) at number two, while first year Karl von Weissenbeck (Winchester, Mass.) and Wheaton doubles partner Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass.) were the victors at the number three spot over Alexander Edelmann and junior Cohl Schusler (Bradford, N.H.).
Tracy made quick work of Lowman at first singles, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win, before Na and von Weissenbeck won each of their respective matches in three sets for the Lyons. Na dropped the first frame to Jensen, 6-3, before getting back on track at third singles with a 6-4 decision in the second set and a dominant 6-0 third frame. von Weissenbeck also lost the opening set to Turner, 6-4, but came back with 6-2, 6-3 showings in the final two frames at fourth singles.
First year Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) earned his first collegiate singles win with ease over Edelmann, 6-0, 6-1 at number five singles for Wheaton, while Lyons' junior Chris Register (Portland, Maine) picked up his first singles win of the year, defeating Schusler, 6-2, 6-1, at sixth singles.
