The Lyons, who received votes in the most recent National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association/D3baseball.com Coaches Poll, win their third straight to improve to 5-5 on the season, while the Rams fall to 3-9.
Wheaton's combination of pitching and defense has been potent in the team's games played in Massachusetts. The Lyons are 5-0 in those contests, while scoring at least 13 runs in every game and seeing their starting pitcher allow no more than a single run in any outing.
Wheaton boasted 10 hitters with at least one hit and saw seven drive in at least one run. The Lyons broke the game open with a seven-run seventh to take a 13-0 advantage.
Young threw 60 strikes in 86 pitches and issued just one free pass, while striking out nine to improve to 2-0 for Wheaton. Studley finished the day going 2-4 with his third long ball of the season, a walk, two runs scored and three runs batted in, while first year first baseman Anthony Teberio (Andover, Mass.) also drove in three runs and was 2-4 with a run scored at the plate. Sophomore Will Haskell (Natick, Mass.) was 2-3 with a double, two RBI and a pair of runs scored and first year left fielder Kevin Matos (Lawrence, Mass.) hit a two-run home run.
Sophomore left fielder Ryan Boyle (Arlington, Mass.) was 2-4 to pace the Rams' offense, while junior first baseman Robert Johnston (Watertown, Mass.), senior Kennedy Wilson (Natick, Mass.) and first year right fielder Lucas Basile (Upton, Mass.) all collected a single. Junior righty Jack Foley (Burlington, Conn.) suffered the loss to drop to 0-1 after giving up five runs on five hits and five walks in addition to two strikeouts.
The Lyons put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead. Senior catcher Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.) and junior shortstop Cavan Brady (Great Barrington, Mass.) each drew a walk to open the frame, before Haskell singled through the right side to bring DeMattio around to score the first run of the afternoon. Teberio was hit by a pitch to load the bases and sophomore center fielder AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) later worked a two-out walk to force in the second run.
Wheaton topped itself in the third with one run better. Studley and DeMattio each belted doubles to begin the third and Brady walked to load the bases for junior second baseman Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.). The infielder delivered with a two-run single to right center, before Haskell plated another run with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
Brady greeted Framingham State's relief pitcher with a double to lead off the fifth, before scoring ahead of a Teberio single down the left field line for a 6-0 Lyons' margin.
Meanwhile, after Griffin gave up a hit in the top of the first for Wheaton, he faced the minimum 16 batters after pitching through the sixth inning. The Rams finally put a runner on second base when Johnston and Boyle each singled to open the seventh, but Griffin set down the final three batters, including two via the strikeout.
The Lyons went to their power game to fuel a seven-run outburst in the seventh. Maher drew a one-out walk and Haskell doubled before Teberio knocked in both runs with a single. Matos followed with his second homer of the season to make it 10-0. Sophomore center fielder AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) and junior third baseman Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) both drew one-out walks to set up Studley for a three-run blast over the left field fence for a 13-0 cushion.
Wheaton tacked on one more run in its final at-bat when sophomore Amedeo Ucci Jr (Warwick, R.I.) reached on an error and scored ahead of an RBI single to right center off the bat of Croteau.
They Lyons return to Sidell Stadium tomorrow to host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 12:00 p.m., while Framingham State hosts Gordon College on March 29 at 3:00 p.m.
