Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The No. 11 Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team fell to University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 13-9, this afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Fla. as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Lyons fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Pointers improve to a perfect 3-0.

The teams combined for 22 runs and 27 hits.

Junior third baseman Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) drove in a game-high three runs and was 2-4 with two walks and a run scored for Wheaton, while sophomore center fielder AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) was 3-5 with a run batted in, a walk and two runs scored. Junior second baseman Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) finished the day with a 2-4 effort with a walk and a run scored. Senior right-handed starting pitcher Gavin Reily (Bridgewater, Mass.) suffered the loss in his first outing of the season, giving up eight runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk to go with a pair of strikeouts. Freshman righty Jackson Walsh (Cumberland, R.I.) tossed four and a third innings of four-hit scoreless relief, while issuing a walk and fanning two in his collegiate debut.

Senior right fielder Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis.) paced the Wisconsin-Stevens Point offense with a 4-5 day that included a home run, a double, three runs scored, two RBI and a walk, while four other Pointers registered multiple hits. Sophomore left fielder Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis.) was 3-6 with a run batted in and three runs scored and senior Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis.) smacked a pair of doubles to drive in two runs in addition to a walk and a run scored. Sophomore first baseman Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis.) was 2-5 with two RBI, a walk and a run scored. Starting southpaw Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis.) received a no-decision after taking a line drive off the foot, rendering him unable to continue after allowing four runs on two hits and a pair of walks to go with three strikeouts. Sophomore right-handed reliever Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill.) earned the win in relief to improve to 1-0 after giving up three runs on six hits and three walks, while fanning a batter.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point scored two runs in the top of the first and added six more in the second to take an 8-0 lead, before the Lyons put up a six-spot of their own in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 8-6. Wheaton added another run in the sixth to climb to within 8-7, but the Pointers scored five times in the seventh to take a 13-7 advantage and effectively put the game out of reach.

Baumann led the game off with a single and came around to score on a homer to right field off the bat of Simmons for a 2-0 WSP lead. The Pointers' six-run second was highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore second baseman Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo.), an RBI double from Luedtke and a run-scoring single from Baumann to help them take an 8-0 advantage.

The Lyons loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third when Maher worked a leadoff walk, junior shortstop Cavan Brady (Great Barrington, Mass.) doubled and first year left fielder Kevin Matos (Lawrence, Mass.) was hit by a pitch. Guindon hit a rocket off Carpenter's foot to knock in Wheaton's first run and keep the bases juiced. Croteau followed with a two-run single to right and senior right fielder Jake Studley (Barrington, R.I.) became the sixth straight batter to reach in the inning when he worked a walk to reload the bases ahead of a sacrifice fly from senior catcher Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.) to cut the margin to 8-5. Senior Stephen Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) also plated a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-6.

The Lyons tacked on another run in the sixth when Matos ripped a double to left center and later scored on a Studley fielder's choice to make it a one-run game.

The Pointers erupted for five more runs in the seventh, taking advantage of an error and some timely hitting. Henwood drove in a pair of runs with a two-out bases loaded single and Luedtke plated a run with a double to give Wisconsin-Stevens Point a 13-7 lead.

Wheaton was the beneficiary of four walks in the eighth to inch closer with another run, with Guindon, Studley and DeMattio all reaching via a free pass before senior first baseman Drew Spirito (Cranston, R.I.) forced in a run with a two-out walk. The Lyons were unable to do any more damage and headed to the ninth with a 13-8 deficit.

Maher singled to lead off the ninth and Guindon later singled as well to set up an RBI two-out single from Croteau to make it 13-9, but Wheaton was unable to put together a complete comeback.

The Lyons return to action tomorrow when they take on Ithaca College at Lake Myrtle Sports Park for a 9:00 a.m. first pitch, while WSP plays Coe College at 9:30 a.m. at the Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla.
