NEW LONDON, N.H. – Senior Chris Register (Portland, Maine) was a double-winner to help the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team to a 5-4 victory this afternoon over host Colby-Sawyer College at Kelsey Tennis Courts in New London, N.H.
The Lyons improve to 1-0 following its first dual match of the season, while the Chargers fall to 0-2.
Colby-Sawyer took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but Wheaton won four of six singles matches to win the match.
Register combined with sophomore Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) to pick up what proved to be a crucial point in doubles play for Wheaton. The pair defeated Colby-Sawyer junior Cohl Schusler (Bradford, N.H.) and first year Alexander Edelmann, 8-7 (4), at number three doubles in a match that was decided by a tie-breaker.
Register continued his winning ways, easily defeating Schusler at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-1, to give the Lyons a 4-3 lead in the match. Senior Jack Luyrink (Paxton, Mass.) sealed the victory for Wheaton with a win at fifth singles for the fifth and deciding point in the match. Luyrink downed Edelmann, 6-4, 6-2 at number five.
The Lyons won at both number one and number two singles. Senior Josh Anschuetz (West Bloomfield, Mich.) dropped just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Chargers' Zsombor Homonnay at number one. Senior Ethan Na (Simsbury, Conn.) also won in straight sets at second singles over Colby-Sawyer first year Aidan Jensen (Essex, Vt.). Na hung on for a 7-6 first set win, before a dominant second frame that resulted in a 6-0 effort to gain the win.
Anschuetz teamed with Luyrink at number one doubles, but fell to Colby-Sawyer's pair of Homonnay and Jensen, 8-6. Na and junior Elijah Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) took Ashton and Peyton Meuse to the limit at number two singles for the Lyons, but fell, 8-7 (5).
Peyton Meuse defeated Wheaton senior Albert Ortega Campos (Malaga, Spain), 7-6 (4), 6-3, at number three singles and Ashton Meuse pulled out a three-set win for the Chargers over Bor at fourth singles. Meuse won the opening set, 7-5, before Bor knotted the match with a 6-4 second set win, but Meuse regrouped to take the third set, 10-6.
The Lyons return to the courts on Wednesday, October 5 when they travel to Easton, Mass. to take on Stonehill College at 3:30 p.m., while Colby-Sawyer heads to Springfield, Mass. to play Springfield College on October 11 at 3:00 p.m.
