Wheaton walks off second game sweeps WPI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Norton, Mass – May 1, 2021 – Down 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning to visiting WPI, Junior Stephen Quigley (Halifax, Mass) laced a ball down the left field line to bring in two runs to win the second game of the afternoon for the Lyons, 4-3. Wheaton won Game One in dominant fashion, with a 14-0 victory. The Lyons move to a 5-1 record in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and 10-2 overall.

Game One: Wheaton 14, WPI 0

Wheaton received a gem from ace Gavin Reily (Bridgewater, Mass.). The senior went seven strong innings, allowing only three hits without giving up a run. Reily also struck out seven Engineer hitters. He was relieved in the eighth by Zach Nichols (Chicopee, Mass.) who fanned two while getting through the inning unscathed. Zach Begin (Georgetown, Mass.) recorded the last three outs of the game for the Lyons, whiffing one in his inning of work.

Wheaton did not waste any time offensively in the first inning, as Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.) singled to center to score leadoff hitter Brody Ashley (Strafford, N.H.). Then, Patrick Santorella (Scituate, Mass.) punched one through the right side of the infield to bring in Jake Studley (Barrington, R.I.) to make it 2-0.

In the second inning, the Lyons broke it open. Ashley brought in George Mulcahey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with a double and Studley then doubled to bring in Ashley. Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) scored on a ground ball hit from DeMattio to make it 5-0. Then, Mark D'Augelli (Easton, Conn.) singled to plate Studley, Andrew Spirito (Cranston, R.I.) got an RBI via a walk, and Quigley capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.

The Lyons kept it going in the third, as Ashley scored on a wild pitch, D'Augelli hit a sac fly to bring in Studley and DeMattio scored on another wild pitch to push the score to 11-0. The fifth inning was more of the same, as DeMattio scored again on an errant throw from the pitcher. Wheaton scored the last two runs of the game via a Croteau homerun in the eighth inning.

Offensively for the Lyons, Ashley was 4-for-4 while scoring three runs. Studley went 2-for-3, scoring three more runs and DeMattio was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's.

Game Two: Wheaton 4, WPI 3

Game Two was more of a battle as WPI scored the first run of the game on a Joe Salvon triple in the first inning. Wheaton responded back in the second, as Ashley poked one through the right side of the infield to score Quigley to knot the score at 1.

TJ DellaCroce had an RBI single for the Engineers in the fourth inning off starter Griffin Young (Dover, N.H.) to give WPI the lead again. From that point on Young was dominant, finishing with eight complete innings while just allowing the two runs with seven punchouts.

Wheaton tied the game again in the seventh, as Studley scored on a wild pitch. The Lyons had plenty of opportunities to grab the lead throughout the game, but WPI starter Everett Wonson made the pitches to be able to get out of trouble when he needed to.

The game went to the ninth tied, but the Engineers managed to score a run on another hit from DellaCroce off reliever Zach Clesas (Johnston, R.I.) to regain the lead. Josh Roberge (Chelmsford, Mass.) came on to get the final two outs of the inning to limit the damage.

Down 3-2, the Lyons did not give in. With one out in the inning, D'Augelli lined a double to right field. Santorella drew a walk and then both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Spirito was intentionally walked to load the based for Quigley, who came up clutch for Wheaton with the hit that plated two to give the Lyons the win.

Quigley was the hero and led the team offensively, going 3 for 5 with two RBI's. D'Augelli went 3 for 4 with a run scored, while Ashley and Studley each recorded two hits for Wheaton.

The Lyons are back at Sidell Stadium tomorrow to host WPI for another doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. The two games will not count toward NEWMAC record.
