Box Score 2 New London, Connecticut. - April 24, 2021 - The Wheaton College Baseball team faced off against Coast Guard Academy in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Coast Guard Academy. The Lyons took both game one 10-4 as well as, game two 18-3.
Game One: Wheaton 10, Coast Guard 4
In Game one of the double header, AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a double, While Jacob Studley (Barrington, R.I.) tallied a 3-for-5 day with two doubles along with three runs batted in and one run scored leading the Lyons to a 10-4 victory. Senior pitcher Gavin Reily (Bridgewater, Mass) went 7.1 strong innings of work only allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out three.
Wheaton recorded four big runs in the third inning as Zach DeMattio (Attleboro, Mass) plates Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) on a sacrifice fly, followed by a Studley line drive into the left center gap scoring Croteau and Guindon for two more. Andrew Spirito ( Cranston, R.I.) scores one more on a single into right field. Following the third inning runs began to be more scattered out including a deep solo home run to left center from Mark D'Augelli (Redding, Conn).
Coast Guard scored three runs in the eighth on a Blake Carroll home run over the left field wall.
Wheaton finished its scoring in the eighth inning also on a Studley single in which Guindon tallied another run in the 10-4 final.
Game Two: Wheaton 18, Coast Guard 3
Game two was a close battle through four innings as the score was only 3-1, in the fifth inning the bats came alive and Wheaton put up a crooked number of seven runs.
Demattio recorded the first RBI of the fifth scoring guindon, followed by a 2-run double to right center field from D'Augelli scoring Studley and Croteau. George Mulcahey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single. The team went on to add three more runs in that inning. Followed by three more in the sixth, one in the eighth and four in the ninth to win the ball game 18-3.
Griffin Young (Dover, N.H.) Five innings of five hit ball only allowing one earned run striking out seven batters faced. Coast Guard Starter Nate Ralph took the loss lasting 4.1 innings while giving up seven runs, five of them being earned.
Wheaton (8-2, 3-1 NEWMAC) will face off against WPI on Saturday, May 1st with a NEWMAC doubleheader at home, first pitch slated to be thrown at noon.
