Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Babson Park, Mass.,-- April 17, 2021 - The Wheaton College baseball team split against Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Govoni Field. The Beavers took game one by a 3-0 score, while the Lyons won game two with a 7-4 final.

With the victory, Wheaton improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the league, while Babson goes to 5-1 overall and 5-1 in NEWMAC action.

Game One: Babson 3, Wheaton 0

A strong performance from senior Gavin Reily (Bridgewater, MA) was not enough as the Babson Beavers edge the Lyons 3-0 today in Game 1 of today's doubleheader at Govoni Field.  Reily went a full seven innings, giving up one earned run on five hits while striking out five Beavers.

In the loss, the 19th ranked Lyons fall to 4-1 on the season, while the 9th ranked Beavers improve to a 5-1 record.  The Lyons received strong performances at the plate from senior center fielder Brody Ashley (Strafford, NH) who had one hit, and battled to see over 20 pitches in his last two plate appearances.  Additionally, junior Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, MA) and senior Patrick Santorella (Scituate, MA) both contributed hits for the Lyons.  Junior right fielder Jacob Studley (Barrington, RI) hit a double late in the 9th.

Babson got on the board early in the bottom of the first with a leadoff triple from center fielder Patrick Manning (Weymouth, MA).  Manning scored on a single from second baseman Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, MA).  Both Manning and Lapham would come around to score in the third inning on Lyon errors.  Senior pitcher Jordy Allard (Woodstock, VT) shut out the Lyons for 8 innings, and Henry Leake (Burbank, CA) got the save in the 9th inning.

Game Two: Wheaton 7, Babson 4

A solid performance from junior Griffin Young (Dover, NH) was enough to push the Lyons past the Babson Beavers 7-4 in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Govoni Field. Young threw seven complete innings with two earned runs, on four hits and struck out eight Beavers.

In the win, the 19th ranked Lyons improved to 5-1 on the season, while the Beavers fell to 5-1. The Lyons received strong performances at the plate from junior shortstop Stephen Quigley (Halifax, MA) who had one hit and drove in three runs. Juniors Jake Studley (Barrington, RI), Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, MA), and Andrew Spirito (Cranston, RI) all contributed with two hits a piece, with Spirito driving in two runs. Sophomore Nick Croteau (Cumberland, RI) and senior George Mulcahey (Brooklyn, NY) each had a run batted in.

Babson's offense was led by Patrick Manning (Weymouth, MA) with two base hits and Jack Ward (Danvers, Mass) who had one hit and one run batted in. The Lyons worked to the Beaver bullpen in quick fashion allowing starter Riley Teevens (Milton, MA) to go 2.2 innings posting four hits and four runs early on the junior pitcher.  Teevens was relieved by Michael Nocchi (Manasquan, NJ) and Jack Theriault (Tewksbury, MA), however the Beaver arms were not enough to stop the hot Lyon bats this afternoon.

The Lyons will return to Govoni Field to wrap up their four game series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
