Baseball Completes Sweep of Emerson with Doubleheader Victories

Northborough, Mass. -- The Wheaton College baseball team opened its 2021 season with a sweep of Emerson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. The Lyons took game one by a 10-3 score and game two by a 25-5 final.

With the victories, Wheaton improved to 2-0 overall and to 2-0 in the league, while Emerson dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in NEWMAC action.


Game One: Wheaton 10, Emerson 3


In the opener, Brody Ashley (Strafford, N.H.) went 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored, while Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with a walk and two runs scored leading the Lyons to a 10-3 victory. Andrew Manni (Middleton, Mass.) picked up the win on the mound for Wheaton allowing three runs in six innings to go along with six strikeouts.

 Wheaton got on the board first in the top of the fourth as Manni plated DeMattio on an RBI single to left. Manni stole second and scored the second run of the game on an RBI single by Stephen Quigley (Halifax, Mass.). In the top of the sixth, Mark D'Augelli (Redding, Conn.) roped a triple to right and scored on a groundout by Patrick Santorella (Scituate, Mass.). Wheaton added one more in the frame on a wild pitch.

Emerson scored its only runs of game one in the bottom of the sixth after Thai Morgan lined a three-run homer over the wall in left.

Wheaton added six more runs before the opener was complete – four in the seventh and two in the ninth. Santorella notched a two-run double and scored on a squeeze bunt, Ashley lined an RBI single to left and Jacob Studley (Barrington, R.I.) registered a two-run double to left for the 10-3 final.


Game Two: Wheaton 25, Emerson 5

Wheaton scored at least one run in all nine innings in the nightcap and was ahead 13-1 through three frames.

A two-run double by Quigley and a sac fly by Manni highlighted the opening inning, while a two-run homer by Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.), an RBI single by Manni and an RBI double by D'Augelli capped inning number two.

The Lyons registered three home runs in the second half of game for a total of four on the day. Studley roped a two-run shot to left center in the fourth, Cody Cavanagh (Holyoke, Mass.) belted a three-run homer to left and D'Augelli lined a solo home run to left as Wheaton led 19-2 midway through. Wheaton added one in the seventh, one in the eighth and four in the ninth to account for the 25-5 victory.

Gavin Reily (Bridgewater, Mass.) started game two for Wheaton and picked up the win (1-0) as he tossed 5.1 innings and allowed five earned runs to go along with five strikeouts. Emerson starter Johnny Maffei took the loss as he surrendered nine runs in just over an inning on the bump.

Wheaton (2-0, 2-0 NEWMAC) will return to action on Saturday, March 27 with a NEWMAC doubleheader at home against Clark University. First pitch is slated for noon.
