NCAA REGIONAL: No. 24 Wheaton Escapes Elimination With 7-3 Win Over St. Joseph's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BOSTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College baseball team lives to see another day after escaping elimination Saturday evening with a 7-3 win over St. Joseph's (Me.) in game five of the UMass Boston Regional at Monan Park.

The game was set-up after the Monks defeated Baruch in game four, while the Lyons fell 12-2 to host UMass.-Boston in game five. Wheaton will now face UMass.-Boston in the regional championship game Sunday. The two sides will play at 11 a.m. with Wheaton needing a win to stay alive. If the Lyons win, they will then take on the Beacons once more, this time at 2:30 p.m.

In the opening game against UMass.-Boston, the Lyons recorded seven hits, but only managed to score twice in the seventh inning. Junior Bryant Salkind knocked in the first Wheaton run with a single to right, which was followed by an RBI single to left from George Mulcahey. With the loss the Lyons are now 0-3 against the Beacons in NCAA tournament play.

Falling into the losers bracket, Wheaton was forced to meet St. Joseph's once more. The Lyons defeated the Monks 9-3 on the opening day behind standout performances from Griffin Young, Salkind, Willy Boyd, and Stephen Quigley

With everything on the line in Saturday's meeting, the Lyons came out strong and rode a solid outing from sophomore Paul Prue. The left pitched eight complete giving up three runs on three hits, striking out and walking two. First-year Zach Clesas came in to close out the game in the ninth giving up just one hit.

Offensively for the Lyons, sophomore Brody Ashley finished the game with a 3-for-4 performance from the plate, while Nick Raposo and Stephen Quigley each finished 2-for-4.

Competing as the visitors for the first time this tournament, the Lyons got things going in the first inning with an RBI single from Raposo. The junior captain knocked in Ashely who led off the contest with a single to left center.

Wheaton tacked on another run in the third this time with an RBI flyout to left center from Conor Gammond. The fly allowed Quigley to tag up at third before making his way home.

The Monks countered in the bottom half of the third with three runs on a pair of singles.

Wheaton recaptured the lead in the fifth with an RBI double down the left field line from Gammond that scored Ashley, which was followed later in the inning by an RBI single to center from Jared Sharkey. The Lyons added three insurance runs in the ninth, starting with Quigley scoring on a wild pitch. Sharkey knocked in the next run with a single through the left side before a double to left from Salkind plated Gammond.
