Sharkey Homers as No. 17 Baseball Defeats MIT 5-2

GAME ONE: No. 17 Wheaton 5 - MIT 2

LOCATION: Norton, Mass. (Sidell Stadium)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College baseball team used a three-run eighth inning to push past visiting MIT 5-2 in game one of the three-game New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series. 
  • Senior Jared Sharkey ended the contest 2-for-3 which included his team-leading 11th home run of the season. The home run ties him for third place in a single season with Wheaton Hall of Famer Damon Whalen, while moving his career number to 19, which is fourth all-time. 
  • First-year Zach Clesas collected his third win of the season after coming in in the eighth inning, giving up just two hits, while striking out one. Paul Prue got the start for the Lyons, going five complete, before being replaced by sophomore Joshua Roberge
  • After four scoreless innings, the Engineers broke through with two runs in the top of the fifth, starting with a bases-loaded walk to Andrew KrauseCory O'Shea came around to score on the walk after leading off the inning with a single. Thomas Allison picked up an RBI with the next at-bat courtesy of a sacrifice fly to center. 
  • Wheaton earned a run back in the home half of the inning on a two-out, RBI single up the middle from Brody Ashley that knocked in Willy Boyd
  • Sharkey knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth with a shot over the fence in left field. 
  • MIT tried to take the lead in the seventh and eighth but stranded three runners. 
  • With two outs and runners at first and second, the Lyons got some help from the Engineers, with Jacob Studley coming around to score on a knock from Bryant Salkind that was mishandled by the MIT shortstop. Another MIT error, this time on a Zach Demattio knock allowed Sharkey to come home. George Mulcahey picked up an RBI with a single up the middle moments later ending the contest in Wheaton's favor 5-3.
