Raposo Homers as Baseball Splits Series with Beloit

GAME ONE: #21 Wheaton 3 - Beloit 8

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Dan Southerland got the start for the Lyons, pitching 5.1 innings, which saw the senior give up four runs on five hits, while striking out seven. Sophomore Zach Pipa came in to relieve Southerland, collecting the his first loss of the season after giving up four runs on two hits. Andrew Iannuci closed out the game on the mound for the Lyons. 
  • Wheaton took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a double to right center from Bryant Salkind that plated Nick RaposoJared Sharkey knocked in Salkind moments later on a triple to deep center. 
  • Beloit countered in the third inning, scoring two runs to tie the contest at 2-2. 
  • Wheaton captured the lead once more in the fifth with a Willy Boyd single to center that brought in Ryan McKeon
  • The Buccaneers responded with a huge sixth inning that saw six runners cross home, earning Beloit their first win of the season.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • First-year Patrick Arter picked up the first win of his career after getting the start for Wheaton. The righty pitched six innings, giving up just one run on three hits, while striking out five and walking one. Jimmy Gowen came in to finsh the game, striking out one of the three batters he faced. 
  • Wheaton fell behind early, but rallied back in the fifth inning. Ruocco led off the inning with a single down the left field line and advanced to second on an overthrown ball by the left fielder. The senior came around to score on the next Lyon at bat with McKeon hitting the ball back to the pitcher, who skied it over the first basemans head, allowing Ruocco to score from second. 
  • McKeon came in to score moments later on a sacrifice fly from Jimmy GianquittiQuinn Krais was knocked in courtesy of a Matt Cook triple to right on the next at bat. 
  • Raposo ended the scoring with a two-run home run over the fence in left field. The home run is Raposo's first of the season and second of his career.
